Phase Change cooling ideas

Hey gang,
I am getting ready to start putting together a phase change cooling system, but was thinking if it would be better to have the waterblock on the cpu be the evaporator or if I should set it up as a waterchiller then pump the water to the waterblock from the chiller? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks

it would be best to put the evaporator on top of the CPU. . .if you chill the water you risk freezing it which is very, very bad. In order to prevent freezing you will end up having to add other chemicals that could potentially reduce the efficiency of the water which would just be a complete waste.

Hey Cryo,
I'm working on getting the compressor I want. The only thing I though about is if I use the waterblock as an evaporator is it might not be enough surface area to make a good evaporator. Or it might work great. I think I'm going to try it that way without the system hooked up to it and see how cold the block gets and test different ways to set it up. Thanks for the reply.

You could use a copper or silver cold plate between the cpu and evaporator. That should spread the heat load over a larger area.

the evaporator could be much smaller than a waterblock.. even somewhat bigger than a die..

i'm also working with a friend on a supercool setup.. (w/o pelts).. that could easily could get below -100C..
its a dual-compressor setup.

how much pressure can that compr of yours handle?? (in bars plz)

Hey Freaky,
I don't really have a compressor yet, I was going to try to use the one I tore out of my window a/c unit which is a 1 hp 10,000 btu Matsushita, the bad thing about it is it's a high temp unit and runs at 309F. That wouldn't make the room to comfortable in the summer but it sure as hell would freeze the cpu. I think I am going to get a 1/5th or 1/3rd hp low temp compr with about a 1,000 btu. I think it should be plenty to cool the cpu off. The thing I like about phase change cooling is it won't kill you computer parts if it leaks, it would make ya feel pretty good if your in the room when it goes. I don't know what the bar rating is on the compressor I have.

That is true unless MBM and shutdown now catch it fast enough. I guess you would have to be pretty lucky for that to happen. I'm still debating on going with a pelt setup, probably 17-24V 176 watter, I just can't find a variable PSU to do it.

I'm going for a phase change system too, i have two 172W TEC´s and a dangeden Maze2-2 copper, that is gonig to be cooled by water, and the water cooled by a phase change system.
with water, if the compressor stop working you will have some time to shutdown the computer before your cpu burn out, if you have the evaporator right on top of the cpu if the compressor fails, pray that you have luck to prevent a meltdown.
