Default Are fans from Sidewinder bad?

I got three Y.S.Tech 120mm fans and the RPM don't show up in BIOS or MBM. Another type of fan I have the speed shows up fine. Is there something about these fans or are they all bad?

TIA

Do they spin? If so they're good.

As for RPMs, many fans don't support monitoring because it isn't very useful. Also no fan will show you RPMs if its plugged in with a molex type connector instead of a 3pin motherboard connector. Those fans would use too much power for most 3pin connectors, so its very unlikely they have RPM monitoring.

Yes they are rpm (three wire) fans. I run the power (red & black) from the power supply, with the yellow wire going to the MB. You have to power the fans with the power supply because the MB can't supply the required wattage.

the MB sensor might need ground as well as signal. I know it should all have the same ground, but its something you could try.

All the RPM sensing is is a small contact inside the fan with one part on the spinning part and the other on the box part. The contact is connected to the +voltage inside the fan. As the fan spins it connects and disconnects the contact and it gives you a pulse.

If you hook that wire to ground POOF no more fan.

If you have a voltage tester take and hook the ground to your case and the +voltage to the RPM sensing line on the fan. Now turn on the fan. If your not getting anything then the contact inside the fan is bad, if you are then it might be your motherboard...

Make sure you run the fan at 12v or it most likely wont get a reading. It will be real jumpy because of the pulsing...

Though I would let everyone know the status of the YS Tech 120mm fan problem. The following is an email from SidewinderComputer. I believe that the whole lot is defective.

"Hello
I had time this morning to sit down and do some testing. When I first started to manufacture our Custom RPM cables, the YS Tech 120mm was one fan I was particularly interested in monitoring its RPM. I recall the RPM monitor feature working when I first tested it on this fan, however after your email I have sat down and it seems that all of our YS Tech 120 stock do not send an rpm signal. I called Globalwin, our distributor of the YS Tech 120mm, who state the white wire should indeed provide the rpm signal. He will have to contact the technician of YS Tech to find out why it's not providing a signal.

So I really don't have an answer for you as to why it is not providing a signal. I'd say they're not defective since all the ones we have on hand do the exact same thing. You are welcome to return them with no restocking fee if you like. I will be updating our rpm cable product description to reflect this oddity."

no no no, thats not what I meant. I meant the motherboard might need both the signal and the ground wire hooked up to the header.
