Has anyone tried to use a radiator without fan?
I have a car-heater similar to the big-mama radiator. I'm gonna use a big reservoir and an eheim 1048 inline, everything outside the PC.I don't have to oc, just want a system with no noise. What about the fan in the power? can i cut it off? use a homemade copperblock and 3/8 hoses |

I've seen it done a while back on an old Celeron. I dunno. If you aren't going to be blowing air through a fan, then a heatercore design probably isn't the best. Your best bet for running a system without fans is to have a lot of copper tubing mounted externally where the heat can naturally (albeit slowly) dissipate into the air. Put a radiator there someplace just in case that may help. Also, the bigger your reservoir, the better.

no fan should be OK as long as there are SOME fans in the case (pref. blowing in). As long as theres some airflow it will work, just less effectively. For a no fan I would suggest a large flat radiator like a blackice2, not a cube.
If that doesnt work out, try a 60cfm 120mm fan... they're really quiet. |

Or rheostat/7/5 volt a 120mm fan. That way its nearly silent but still much better then nothing.

Damn Jim, what the hell pump are you using for that thing??? With the water flowing through those tube things it must eat flow. Still I think thats a better approach to "enviroental" cooling than the drum burried in the back yard approach. Where do you live? What kind of temps do you get?

I had mine running without a fan for a while until I mounted it in the case. I had the radiator and pump sitting on a milk crate beside my tower. when the radiator was laying flat there was enough convective(sp?) air flow to keep my T-bird cool at 1.4 (it's stock speed). it would get pretty hot under load however so I ended up putting a little desk fan under it (the clip on type) and all was well. I never tried overclocking with it set up that way however...but it sure was quiet.
BTW, i missed that pic before I posted, that is AWESOME!!! [ 10-25-2001: Message edited by: WaterPog ]

Nice Jim, those from baseboard heaters? Looks like you'd need a 1hp sump pump to get enough flow through that kind of setup.. heh..

I have a 1140 GPH pump, The Lifeguard Quiet One. I get 3 gallons per minute at the return line, remember, my radiators(24 linear feet of 3/4" ID)has NO restrictions whatsoever, so its like running through plain tubing, so a smaller pump could run it and was till I upgraded the Mag 5 pump only cause I had a leak in the intake. Pump is only 87 watts(thats .73 Amps
![]() Temps are really stable, the water stays at about 3C above ambient and the CPU core stays at 3C above water temp, here is a pict: http://dimonetonline.com/kgb/jim/Nows_its_cold.JPG Jim [ 10-26-2001: Message edited by: Jim ] |
