Default Soc A WB Clamp Device (non 4 hole type) Links

New member getting hooked on WC.

After purchasing the Swifty CPU and GPU WBs a few weeks ago to replace my Koolance WBs, I have found that I just HATE the way the Swiftys mount! I despise the standoffs! After several nerve-wracking CPU swap-outs having to manipulate the screws, springs, and nuts while not crushing the core, I have been on the hunt for alternative WB hold-down brackets for my next WB purchase.

While I know many of you favor the 4 screw mobo mounting design like the Swifty, personally, I can't stand that approach. I like ease of use and really enjoy the ease of my Koolance bracket.

Here are some others I've discovered and currently partial to the Dtek 6 tab clamp.

I'd be interested in other clamps you've come across and your personal favorites.

Welcome to ProCooling!

I'm in the process of designing a waterblock, and I've examined this pretty closely.

Out of the five mounts you listed, the last one does not fully meet AMD specs, and I'm sorry that it had to come from this very site! As per AMD specs, the clamping force should be applied longitudinaly over the core, and not be off-center by more than 1.5 mm.

I really like the third one, from DangerDen (but it's still out of spec).

You forgot Innovatek with their "magic screw":

And, of course, Aquacomputer with the fabulous CuPlex Evo:

Both of which are somewhat out of spec.

The innovatech applies a central pressure, in the middle. Not too bad.

The Aqua comp clamping pressure is very off center, and not longitudinal in any way.

True, but even though I really like the Innovatek clamp, I chose not to include it since I assumed it was indigenous to the WB itself. The others I listed I assumed could be used on most WBs. Of course, being new to WC, I may be wrong. I had not seen that Aquacomputer WB before but I assume its clamp is also indigenous its WB as well. Is there a US/English site that has more info on their gear?

I read the thread and certainly understand the concept but it seems strange the zif tabs encourage a more latitude solution. How could a clamp be mounted to the holes or tabs and meet this requirement?

BTW, thanks for the welcome and all the responses. I'm going to continue to look for retention alternatives until I can find one I can live with. The Swifty wouldn't be bad if it used more of a 4-protuding-bolt-stud-and-nut approach instead of 4 screws going down into the WB/mobo.

The Ideal heatsink hold is provided by a single articulated pressure point right in the vertical axis of the center of the core. The pressure point is connected to the holds at socket lugs or mainboard holes by some kind of rigid or flexible element (arm).

This way any unbalance of claming force between the holds is automaticaly compensated by the pivoting arm.

Most of the socket clips comply with this concept, but almost none of the mobo hold down. The best one I’ve seen is from Paul Vodrazka. There the four springs press down the connecting “spider”. So when you tighten the center bolt, in compress the springs and apply all the force only at his tip.

Wow, I must agree. I had never seen that until now. I like the block as well but not nearly as much as the retention mechanism. Shame so many WBs have a nozzle where that center hold-down is located. I bet it would work with almost any WB if not for that. Anyone know if he is still selling them?

Ewwww. I'm not sure i'm willing. Are you a tall blonde woman, slim and handsome with nice boobs ?

Joke aside, it's no biggie. You can have quite excellent blocks in the USA. TC-4, Spir@l, Maze3, Swifties, etc. Oh and Paul Vodrazka's most excellent pieces of art ! All those will cost you far less than a CuPlex + shipping (shipping will cost as much as the block itself.. which is not exactly cheap, ~$70)
If you really want those lookers, bugger a store so they import Aquacomputer products. I think Innovatek are already imported by someone in the USA, you can try and ask these persons.
