fan shroud for rad - is it necessary

Hi,

Has anyone tested the difference using and not using a fan shroud with their rads? I might have to just mount the fans directly to the rad because of space - still searching for a heater core 5 3/4" or less wide.

Shrouds help, but the radiator should still work well without a shroud. Space will be a constraint for me in my upcoming Chilli Professional Case watercooling project. So I am going to have to mount the fan directly to the radiator. It will still work well, but it won't work quite as well as a shrouded fan would.

Smallest heater core I could find was from 87 Chevette. It is 5 7/8" wide.

well w/o a shroud then your only using the cooling area of the rad that is directly next to the fins of the fan, not even the middle where the motor is... a shroud lets you use the entire cooling surface of the rad

well if the rad is almost an exact fit for 2 120mm fans like the one most of us seem to be getting now, then you are losing what? maybe 2 2"diameter circles in the center of each fan? i htink i'll see how she performs with em just strapped on before i bother with a shroud.

good news for me tho we just got a menards in lansing, and they actually sell a LOT more fittings, and sheet metal, and plexi, and everything than either home despot or lowese and have competetive pricing. so at least if i need one i can get the materials now, before it looked like i owuld have to ORDER a sheet of aluminum to make one

do you have any hobbyshops around? in my local one, i saw some thick paper, like cardboard or construction paper, that had metal on one side. maybe it was a metal sticker. just another option. it might be easier to work with than alu though.

I found a heater core that was 10 3/4 X 5 5/8 X 2 - from a cadillac fleetwood brouham 1992-1979. I autozone part # is 398214.

Great Site....

I went down to autozone and was checking out their book for heater cores. I found the one I needed: Autozone part #398260 Size: 5 7/8 tall, 6 1/2 wide, 2 thick. It had to fit in a tight area. The bib mamma and such are like an inch too big... This one is perfect. Thanks Man.

One question i see CT type on many cores. Anyone know what that means?

Quick note:

Those dimensions are usually foe fin size. Not total outside size.

I went down to Autozone and say the cores they are usually 1-1.75 " larger in both heighth and width.

Hey guys.
This be my first post here, and i must say i find great inspiration for my projects here

I picked up a rad like this one: http://www.heatercore4u.com/2-747.htm

Modded it with 3/8" chrome fittings and spraypainted it black

Im gonna get around to testing it as soon as my new parts arrive.

Using it with a Swiftech MCW462-btec + 156W pelt,
Gpu block + northbridge block cooling.
How much airflow will i need?
Thinking about 2 92mm sunons that blow 39cfm each at 37dBa with a shroud that fits the radiator, but im not sure if it will do the trick.

i hope you only spray painted the outside. other than that, it should look great black. i was going to paint mine blue.

Only spraypainted the top and bottom, then polished the fins a bit.
Will get some pictures up when i get it all finished.
