Default VIA 1300 Pump Round up results...

Hey All, I was just wonder, among all of us, who owns a VIA 1300, like myself? I just got done reading the http://www.overclockers.com/articles723/ pump round up which featured a Hydor L20/30, VIA 1300, Eheim 1048/1250 and a misc Becket 150 Centrif pump... After seeing the results and reading, I figured that the pump that would out shine all the rest of the OVERPRICED pumps would be my VIA 1300, as you'll read at the end, but what I'm wondering is this: Does any of your VIA's make a nasty little HummmMmmMmmMmmMmm sound like mine? Maybe it's my cheap case that increases the resonation (sp)? I've got it suspended from my res, which is top mounted on my case, but is still fully internal etc... The Humm isn't too bad, but from some other's that I've heard about having the same pump that is nearly silent? What gives?! I've checked the shaft (ceramic) and it's perfectly straight, everything seems fine, cept for the Humm and oh yeah the massive heat it produces... BTW- I don't have any 90°bends, Nor do I have a restrictive block/Res/ I'm running a mix of 1/2 and 3/4" lines.... ARGH!

Fixes the hum quite nicely.

Hey! Thanks for the reply, I'm going to try it out soon as I get home, it's a nice pump, just the vibration/humm was getting annoying... if this mod actually works, I might be able to mount it in a reasonable place now!

Hey, I tried that mod out and I think it damn well worked! I took everything out and epoxied the impeller etc... and what's funny about the mod is that the pump does a little rumbbling to get the water moving at first, then swooosh everythings flowing and MUCH quieter, though I don't have a db meter, I know the vibration has been softened and the humm is at a normal and acceptable level (meaning I can't really notice it cause of fans etc.) Thanks for that link, you saved me months of ongoing frustration!

Yeah, that rumbling at the beginning scared me the first time. Glad you liked the mod. I was about to smash my Via Aqua with a baseball bat before I found the mod.

BTW anyone know if the impeller mod is good for Maxijet 1200's?

I know it works on the Via, the Hydor L20, the Hydor L30, and the Swiftech. Basically most of the pumps of this type are constructed the same. I looked at a Maxijet in an aquarium store, and it looked to be the same construction which would imply it would work, but no promises.

The quick check would be taking the front off, and seeing if the impellor has "play," i.e. without the "drive shaft" (I can't remember what pump parts are called, but the thingy with the magnet on it, not the spindle) moving, then the fix should work.

How much heat are we talking about?

I have a 1300 and may end up getting a Danner Mag 3 if I need more flow ($40 and a 10-foot max head, but with a lower head than the Via at 0 feet). The rest of my cooling gear will be getting here today.

Anyone using a Mag 3?
