Default OMG a "why are my temps so high" thread?!?!

OK so i've had my watercooling setup running for a week now, and am very dissatisfied.

Its an external setup, with a 10gal res of tap water, a Maxijet 1200 submerged, ½" ID tubing, 5½"x7½" heatercore, and a Maze2 waterblock. The processor is a 1700+ Tbred B, running at 12.5x166=2088Mhz for a rating of 2600+ at 1.75v.

My temperatures hover around the 40°C mark (measured by my EP-8RDA's sensor) - sometimes higher, like 44° in the morning when its really stuffy inside, sometimes lower, like 39° when i've left the window open for a while. Room temperature stays between 72°F and 76°F.

The water is cool to the touch, even after running for days straight. I am using just the heatercore right now - when i have a fan on it (shrouded), temps drop around 3-4°C roughly.

Why the bad temps? With this exact same setup but a 40CFM fan on my AX-7, i was getting the same temps, maybe a degree or two higher.

What i want to know is whether i ****ed anything up to make my temps so high... with a shrouded fan like i have, they should be much lower, shouldn't they? And the heatercore is in free air so it should be giving lower temps than one mounted in a case.

I used AS3 the first time and mounted the block without washers, with just the springs and the nuts. This time i used Chomerics 1641 paste and used washers to increase mounting pressure (taking due care to avoid crushing the core) The block seems to be on there pretty solid and i have used thermal paste before, so its not likely i messed it up twice...

I'm using 10ft of tubing total - 5ft from pump to block, 5ft from block to heatercore (the outlet of the heatercore flows into the res) The flowrate is nothing to write home about - neither a trickle nor a torrent.

What could be wrong??!??!

Run that Maxijet inline instead of submerged. That's worth a decent drop in temps.

Don't depend on the board sensors to much. Their not all that accurate. Plus once your water cooled, those sensors are no longer affected by air flow from a cpu fan making the temps low. Inside Cpu diode isn't effect by this but still isn't all that accurate.

What kind of fan are you using? That can be something to look at.

Always use the fan, shroud. Only use a very very small amount of AS3. To much of any thermal paste can be harmfull to temps. The biggest things with your setup I would think about changing is that submersed Maxijet, and that long 5ft tubing from pump to block. Find a way to shorten that. Those two things are hurting your temps worse than anything else.
