I couldn't find any general forum to put this in, so stuck it here.

I just come out of computer haidies land

. I put two systems together, one a new dually, the other one was an upgrade. To make a long story short, I think that I went a little overboard on the fans. I came here looking for help, well, begging is more like it.

I put two tricolored 120 mm fans in the top and two tricolored 120 mm fans in the door. I put two '90s in the front and two '90s in the rear. I used a 80 cfm fan on the heat sink. Now I am old and near deaf but the noise is about to drive me crazy.

So I came here and hit search and Low and behold, a vertual GoldMine of information. So instead of aggravating and bothering you gentlemen, I will simply say you have a awfully nice site, that is a gold mine of information.

Welcome to ProCooling!

We don't often see people running 9 fans (or more likely: few admit it!), so if you want to swap it all out for some most excellent cooling, that'll even let your PC live a little longer, and relieve your ears of the tornadoes, you're at the right place.

As a start, a bit of electronic knowledge might help: look/search for fan controllers.

We've got a few completely fan-free members too!

LOL, that just reminded me, I used to have 9 fans before I went watercooling...Last summer....

2 fans front, 2 back, 2 on the side, gpu, cpu and psu...Hehe, dunno if this is any help to you ancient, but you can put most of those fans on 7 volts, or try the speedfan software

I used to have it running on my palomino setup, it worked nicely, but couldn't control all the fans in system...

. This is my first attempt to do any kind of mod work. I have arthritus in my hand's, so I have to have a program called the dragon to do my typing for me. I found 4 fan controllers, 2 went to Zalman heat sinks and the other two were from thermal take, three positions on those. I can hardly hear my computer now

I really appreciate that link, it really hit's the spot. I still have my other case to do. My case is 35 degrees centigrade and my 3000 CPU is 39 degrees centigrade. Not to shabby, for a 77-year-old goat, that cant think straight at times

You would have laughed your rearend off if you had seen me trying to drill these 120 mm holes with a hole saw. It took me 15 minutes to get the drill on the mark

Yeah, don't use the Radio Shack ones. The 5 watter is more like .5watt. I am using one right now and have less than a watt going through it and it is hot! There just no good. looks like you got a good projects going there!

heheheh I remember when I had 12 fans total in my setup and I was proud of it.

Let me see.... (1) Case fan, (1) PSU fan, (4) CPU fans; celery sandwich, (1) main VGA fan, (2) 3D VGA fans; dual Voodoo2 coolers, & (3) HDD cooler fans; half-height SCSI drive.
I dont even remember it being that loud.....................hmmmm maybe that is why I have to turn up my car stereo so loud now adays

Another option may be the watercooling route. Slapping one of the external kits to your machine (such as the EXOS) may quiet things down significantly, allowing you to remove many of your fans altogether, and they are almost painless to install. Another option would be running one of the phase change kits such as the Prometia or Vapochill. In the Prommy you'd have to replace the stock fan with a quiet Panaflo or the equivalent, though that is pretty easy. The only problem with that is with arthritic hands it may be difficult to install the socket sealing materials, though I don't know how much dexterity you have left (my Grandma has arthritis really bad and can't even dial a phone ... I know how bad it can get!). That option would also quiet things down quite a bit due to being able to remove most of the fans.

High end air cooling is an art of diminishing returns: many times four fans do just as much as ten. Consider the idea that even if you stick with aircooling, you may not need all of the fans you're using. Try unplugging a few altogether and seeing what it does to your temps. Most people I've helped with high-end aircooling have had the best results with one 120mm fan over the CPU HSF, one 80mm fan exhausting in the lower front, one 80mm fan exhausting in the mid-rear, and one exhausting via the PSU, with all of the fans except for the HSF detuned to 7V. The only possible mod to this would be if they had a really hot GPU, in which case another detuned 80 would be blowing air in through the side over the graphics card. If done right with a good CPU HSF, the whole system can stay under 47dB.

That's just my .02, though.
