Default xp1700's.. not unlocked?

hi
im having some problems trying to get the cpu to go above the multiplier of 12.5..
i have bad memory at the moment, only pc2100 crucial stuff, and its not going above 148fsb.. which i can understand.
but when i just try and overclock the cpu anymore it just goes back to 1100mhz and i have to go in the bios and 'reset' it..
can anyone help me out here? i have just downloaded the latest bios patch for the board (i have a epox 8RDA+ nforce 2, with one of the 'special' xp1700s that are floating about).. if you need anymore info, please just shout!
thanks for the help!

Ah ah ah ... there are two ranges of multipliers that are used in the processors: 12.5x and below, and 13x and above. Without rough surgery to your chip and/or board, you will not be able to get above 12.5x. In reality, if you are using good memory, you shouldn't need that anyway: 12.5x200 = 2500 mhz. Mine is currently at 12.5x204.

Your chip IS unlocked or you wouldn't be able to change it to 12.5x.

starting to make sense now...

so what you are saying is, set the fsb at a higher than average rate (180 to 210 or something?) and then see how far it will go up using the multiplier? then when or if it gets to 12.5, just keep upping the fsb until it wont go no higher?
would more mhz help me or would a higher fsb help more?
that is an impressive over clock..what cpu do you have? i have a 1700 thats up to about 2200 speeds..
also im having a slight problem..
you know when you right click my computer and go to the generals tab when you click on properties and it displays memory size, type of cpu and speed of it?
well mine has just got the amount of memory and thats it.. am i missing something here because it was there not so long ago?!!??! is there anything i have done to make it go like this or what? it wont let me post 3dmark scores to the internet, because it doesnt know what the cpu is..
but in the device menu, it tells me its a xp2200.. any ideas? im fresh out of luck there!!
thanks for the help!!

The actual speed of your processor is governed by the multiplyer * the front side bus. So if you have your FSB at 100 and your multiplyer at 10 then your chip is going to run at 1000 MHz. Having a higher front side bus while sometimes being harder to achieve will give you a much bigger performance increase than just increasing your multiplier. Increasing your FSB will in essence increase the operating speed of all the devices that use the northbridge controller. (PCI, Ram, lots of integrated stuff) most everything but the AGP card. So basically if you can pull off a good FSB OC then its better than just having a fast processor.

well makes sense...

the only thing that dont make sense to me is whats happening on this darn pc of mine!!
on my scsi drive when i boot up, i can go to the system properties and then go to tab, general, i can get the speed of my cpu, make, and how much ram i have..
when i do the same thing on my ide drive, the stupid thing is just saying how much ram i have.. WHY IS THIS!!?!?!? something so small and its just annoying me so darn much!
i have tried ghosting the drive, the only thing i have yet to try is formatting the ide partion and then re-ghosting it, but im not sure it will make any difference...
has any one got any ideas?
back to the more important thing..

right, at the moment, im running 12.5multiplier with a 148fsb. i cant go any faster because my pc2100 memory wont let me and i cant go over the 12.5multiplier either..
im waiting to get faster memory, corsair xms 3500 should be more than enough . then i can see what will happen..
im aiming for 2ghz with a fsb of 200.. so that will be a 10 multiplier.. correct?
if i can max it out at 12.5 i will be most pleased (2.5ghz) but i doubt very much i will be able to get such an overclock.. but i wouldnt complain..
i do aim to keep the fsb as high i can, but im unsure as to how far i will be able to get it up.. (so to speak !! )
i think i have a lock that will make the pci/agp stay at the right speed, so im hoping that wont be a problem...
anyway, thanks for the help!!

I have said this before in another thread but SCSI controllers are notorious for being a problem with an overclocked front side bus. If you can some how lock the PCI speed to 33 then that isnt the issue, but if you have an increased PCI speed and a scsi controller then that is your problem.

like i have said, im not sure whether or not the pci speeds are going to be locked, but the agp speeds are set to 66mhz, which i think are correct. i have had no problems with overclocking so far, its just the darn pc2100 memory i have installed, its really holding the system back!! roll on corsair!

The FSB is locked on your motherboard, so that won't be an issue. It CAN'T be an issue. As for why your system isn't reporting right in your system tray is a mystery ... as long as it reads correctly in your BIOS does it really matter? WinXP does strange things in its system recognition (I'm assuming that is what you're using).

To make it short, if it runs on the overclocked settings, who gives a damn what WinX reports it as. Misreported info will not cause instability.

Did you bump your voltage up? I cant get mine over 148 w/out a voltage increase, otherwise it wont post. Have you tried that?

been there.. tired that

but its all down to my memory im afaird..
i cant go above 148 without it bombing out.. which in my terms, is a pain in the arse!!!!
but still when i get the corsair xms memory i want, all will be fine..
i just hope that the board will like the memory.. i have been hearing things that it wont!! ARG!!

All except one 8RDA+/8RGA+ boards I've installed have used Corsair XMS and not a single one had problems. If you get the newest revision memory (i.e. Newegg, Googlegear, etc) you won't have issues. Mostly, the problem is in autodetecting the timings on some of the older memory sticks. Any new revisions of XMS are not going to give you a lick of trouble.

Default memory problems..

well im hoping i wont have problems, but its just my luck that i will!
i wont be getting the memory for a little while sadly, i have to save up about £700 for some other stuff as well, as i cant be bothered to have to pay out so much more for two lots of carridge.. i know this way will take longer, but in the end i should hopefully end up paying less! stupid i know i am, but at the end of the day, i can only but try
how can i tell whether or not i will have newer memory or older memory when i come to buy it?
thanks for all the help!!!
