I just bought myself a Iwaki MD-20RLT over at AquariumPros and I was wondering whether this thing comes with a power cord and plug. Sounds like a stupid question, but in all the pictures and descriptions I've read, I see nothing mentioned. By the way this will be going together with a Scoop V2.0/XLR120 and a Cascade SS in case any of you are wondering. I can't wait

prolly just get a corded plug from something u dont use or at an electronics and cut it, splice the wires, and solder them together. or use electrical tape if dont wanna bother with soldering, not the best option but its easy.

Power it with a relay, which requires bare wires anyway.

I suppose I could always get one of these:
![]() Think it's strong enough to power my new pump?

Several security issues with that model. I would not use it. The ground is not grounded. If you look at the back of the board there is no trace for the earth wire. Just buy a 12vdc 115vac solid state relay, and wire it up. Canabilize the plug from an old powersupply and mount it in the back of your case. Then you could use a regular pc power cord for it.

That would work. I would wrap that board in heatshrink though. Or make sure you insulate it well. Do not want to mess around with 110vac....

Don't be afraid to make your own. I did it, not really knowing what I was up to, and it worked fine, and only took me a half hour. I bought the aforementioned relay, a big piece of perfboard, some wire, and one of those wire-grabby things [don't know the name, you find them on the back of stereo receivers to hold the speaker wires in place] and soldered that all together. Then, I just stuck a molex connector to the 12V coil and that's it. The clips also make it really easy to set up and use too.
BO(V)BZ PS: If I get a digital camera, I'll take some pics of my relay. |

You could use the PCI relay card you mentioned earlier and pick up an earth ground from anywhere in your metal case if you really need it. Does the pump cord even have three wires? Do the Iwakis have exposed metal?
edit: I am also looking at an Iwaki for my rig...

It is really better to pick a common ground point in the case to tie all of your grounds to -and have the three wire cord ground there too. This is better than multiple cords where each has it's own ground conductor b/c this can introduce ground loop circuit paths (though this is usually not a problem).

I'll decide what to do when my pump gets here. Should probably be here early next week or late this week.

LOL... Years ago (since more than 30 years now we went to 220VAC in Europe) I used to accidently touch 110VAC. It was painfull but I survived... I also accidently touched several times 220VAC since then, I can assure you, your arm is useless for a couple of hours... ![]() CD ![]()

We have 220 here as well, for washing machines and such, been shocked by that, and I was not a happy camper. Arm was not useless, but felt wierd as hell....

Hah, 220 just tingles.
I've had the pleasure of 480VAC from hand to hand. (And scars on both hands to show for it.) Nothing quite like realizing; "I can't let go. I can't yell. I'm going to die." Fortunately I was standing up, and fell away from the piece of equipment I was working on. But yeah, 220V and 110V can kill you. Don't mess with it unless you know what you are doing. |

You're quite lucky to have survived that... Did it happen in 1987 by any chance? (hence, Since87?!?)

No, 87 was when I first overclocked a computer. The electrocution was about five years ago.

I've been shocked quite a few times by quite a few things..
First when I was a little tyke I was pulling a plug outta the wall to move the lamp. And I didnt just pull the plug but left my hand there a little bit. I wasnt looking obviously and touched both positive and negative prongs on the household current in America... Either the lights blinked or my eyes got lite up lol.. Second time I had the stupid idea of when I was a little older to stick a flat head screw driver in a wall socket "just to see what it would do"... Whole half of the house went off... And i got quite a buss from that... Third time I was outside with my father and he was messing with his lawn mower. Messing as in trying to figure out why his mower wouldnt work when it just did a week ago. So he told me to hold a wire for him. And he yanked the stupid pull cord and man did that shock me one. Never do that again. A couple of other times too can't remember. But I do remember the feeling. Like "whoa"... hehe.... My dad got hit by a 220V from a wall panel... he was switching it off and it arched from his hand to his head... he was in the hospital for about 3 days...

I remember "playing" with an outlet, when I was 8: I blew a breaker, but didn't get shocked.
![]() Otherwise, I've zapped myself a few times, in my teenage years, toying with AC motors. Nothing significant. I've burnt myself with a soldering iron a few times, and occasionally still do. ![]() |

I was playing with a disposable camera and was taking it apart. And shocked myself on the bulb or whatever. I don't know how much that is, but my finger turned brown for a few days. I was pissed too
