Pump Noise
I've been having trouble with a deteriorating impeller on my via aqua 1300. The center where the shaft runs through is no longer circular, but oval on one side. As a replacement, I'm looking for the quietest pump available. All I've gathered is that most noise is vibration-related, and that centrifugal might be better.
ps. after searching through the forums, there doesn't seem to be any clear winner on the noise issue.

Cant you just buy a replacement impeller/shaft? BTW I use a Danner Mag3 and I consider it to be very quiet, but not silent. There is a very low level hum. Rad fans at 800 RPM make more noise than the pump.

I had 2 via aquas break (same problem, the impellor started to wear and then they rattled, probably from cavitation) before I got the mag 3, and lemme tell ya, there is no going back. This pump is more quiet and more powerful than the via, and they are built like tanks.

I have done this mod to my pump. The problem I described earlier concerns increased rattling over several months as the impeller-shaft interface wears down. It is possibly caused by the imbalance the glue causes, but who knows. For a replacement impeller, I'm looking at about $12, while a new pump is only $18. I take it that a danner mag 3 would be a good replacement. Anyone think there are quieter pumps?

Just a word of warning for the Danner users, I tried gluing my Mag 3 impeller and it wouldnt start reliably after that. I had to break it down and scrape all the glue off. I dont know if its because I used JB Weld, or because I put too much on or what but thats what happened. Scraping off JB weld is NOT fun. I noticed when I was applying it that the JB Weld actually stretched toward the magnet as I was putting it on. Perhaps its a conductor and screwed up the fields, who knows.

Don't know if it caused your problem or not, but JB Weld is a 'Steel filled' epoxy. IOW, it is an epoxy resin that has been mixed with tiny steel particles. The steel is why you noticed the stuff getting pulled towards the magnet as you were putting it on. I wouldn't have thought it would be a problem unless you let it get into someplace that bound things up, but who knows.
If you try it again, I'd suggest using a non-magnetic adhesive at the very least. Gooserider

Wow, old thread.
I dont think it was because it was off balance, but I dont really know why it happened. Someone else here reported the same thing when they locked the two together. Its like the magnet part needs a little free play to spin up before engaging the impeller. It would only spin slowly if I started it underwater, but if I lifted it out of the water then dropped it in it would spin right up. Anyway I didnt need to glue the impeller/magnet together anyway it turns out... after cleaning off the JB weld and running the pump for a day or two the clicking noise went away on its own. Maybe it was caused by air bubbles. Its silent except for a very minimal 60Hz hum. Mines been running since around January of 2004 with no problems. I never unplug it except to service the PC. There are other threads here about the Danner that cover this in more detail. Heres a good one. http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/sho...ghlight=danner
