About a year ago i started toying with the idea of a chamber that contained the motherboard, filling it with Nitrogen and using a phase change system inside. After about 3 months construction I had it. I've been running the system for the last 8months or so.
Ambient Temps inside -8c to +7c CPU with load is +12c (From the temp probe on the cpu) The Hard drives, Cd-rom are all outside of the container, it's a little messy in the pictures but i was running out of time quick. The phase change system turns on every 10mins or so. http://www.fragapalooza.com/gallery/...avham/DSC01268 http://www.fragapalooza.com/gallery/...avham/DSC01269 http://www.fragapalooza.com/gallery/...avham/DSC01270 So i guess /flame on.... Should I call the men in white coats in now, or have they all ready been to visit you? LOL
U have certainly upped the level of fase change cooling with that rig. Mayb u could mod an olg refrigerator system nxt n c if u can get the temps even lower. Though it would take alot more work!

What does the nitrogen actually do?

I assume the nitrogen circulates and the phase change cools it. The nitrogen then keeps everything cold.

Well, thats original. How fast does the N2 leak out? Do you fill it before operation, once a week, once a day? Is it pressurized?

I choose nitrogen for several reasons, here's a few, not very dangerous, easy to transport, cheap and easy to get. Now not to say that I couldn't have used something else, i mean CO2, realistically any gas would do. Also Nitrogen when you generally buy it, has fewer impurities. Nitrogen is commonly used as a scientific gas, so it has a higher standard or purity or at least the option is there to buy a purer quality. Which means less moist, hence no components would corrode or get exposed to moister droplets due to the low temperatures. In the end I decided nitrogen because I'm a Paint ball fan.
And yes the nitrogen basically circulates the cold air, which sweeps over the CPU and Video card. As for filling the chamber, at Fragapalooza where it was first tested, I used a lot filling it almost every 5mins, just adding a bit to top it off. My goal was originally to try to maintain 1psi. But as usual leaks were hard to avoid.... mind you small leaks. After much thinking, and watching how the chamber reacted and moister levels, i figured out that due to the fact that Nitrogen has the same general weight as regular air, when the chamber was filled both the inside and outside pressures were neutral to each other. (I also threw in some Desiccants to capture any loose moister roaming in the original purge.) At this point I've left the chamber with out filling it for almost a week and have never once noticed any moister build up on the inside. However on a humid day the chambers cold temperature often coat the side and windows with water droplets. But all on the outside mind you. One great bonus to this method is that there's little to no Maintenace; there no dust to clog fans, no dust period. In the end I’m quite please with the way it turned out. I also could have gotten the chamber a lot colder but with time restraints and size restraints I had to go with a smaller evaporator. The unit that I’m using is a Danfoss FF8.5GXN0 r132a Well I hope I’ve answered some of the questions. Emperor Que |

It's all custom made, it's basicly a pvc PIPE off an oil pipe i beleve. It's mesures 12inched across and about 15inches long. I had to run power and all other cables outside the case, which proved to be a bit challenging. \\
The evaporator temps are about -20c, and the ambient temp inside the case is about -10c to +7, then it kicks back on and brings the temp back to -10c. The CPU temp at Idle is about +4c, and with a load it goes to about +12c. All in all a good temp. Emperor Que |

Sounds wicked. Have you built a water cooling rig before? How would you compare them in difficulty of creation? What about cost difference?
