Default N00B question re; what pump to use???

Hey all

I'm am putting together my first water cooling set up, cooling an amd 64 3500+. So far ive collected a D-tek white water CPU water block, D-tek pro-120 radiator, and ½ inch Tygon tubing. I am curios as to what pump I should acquire to use with the set up. I'm under the impression that the whitewater water block has restrictive flow and so I should get something with a little more head. I also at some point would like to cool my Geforce 6800 and a WD raptor drive and need to factor that in.

I am under the impression as for an all around pump for water cooling the AquaExtreme 50Z / MCP600 Rev2.0 cant be beat, unless you have two or an Iwaki Z series. I also am curios as to weather a Blueline HD20 would be advisable.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

For just a WW and a HC a 50z would be perfect.

I have an MCP600 (50z with swiftech branding). The install was easy, it runs quiet, great performance... I couldn't be happier. Tough to go wrong with it. Anything else would probably be overkill and you probably wouldn't see a noticable increase in performance in a normal loop (aforementioned WW and HC).

as for your 6800, get a danger den maze 4 later and youll be fine. as for your raptor, you dont need to water cool it. just get some quiet fans

i think i would have to go with the Danger Den NV-68 or something comparable for the 6800 and the WD740GD drives run a bit hot, but i haven’t looked into HD water cooling all that much yet. dont know the pluses and minuses yet.

what is the situation suitable for a pump like the bluelines?

Concerning the Blueline pump?

Eh well isnt one of the blueline pumps the 50z? Except yellow? Remember someone asking "does anyone use these pumps?" and BillA saying "thousands use the ###" where ### was some blueline model that looked exactly like the mcp600/50z

Anyways... It depends on what blueline. anything that gives less head than the 50z wouldnt be advisable. Anything that pulls a lot more power isnt good. the HC you havent isnt very large so any pump that pulls a good deal more power is just going to raise your temps unless it ups your flow some unrealistic amount. Your setup is very simple and doesnt need a lot of pumping power as its not that restrictive. The idea pump for you is most likely the 50z.

thanks james! you put things into perspective. the blueline i was looking at was the equivalence of the iwaki wmd20 and has something like 13.5 head and 480 gph. not sure about the amount of heat discharged. but as i now understand it i would need a rad the size of 3 120mm fans to put enough restriction on the flow for this blueline to work at any sort of potential. i do plan to add a hdd cooler into the loop as well as a GPU block at some point, but even then it seems that the 50z would be enough.

any other pumps recommended for a simple loop like the one im setting up? like whats the potential of a mag 3 are they any good or is it just advisable to stick with the dc smaller pumps?
