Default Black Ice pics! (big momma mounted w/ 4 80mm fans)

Yo all. Whaddup. I've been working on Black Ice slowly but surely. All the case-modding should be done by next weekend or so. The main part of Black Ice is the 150w water chiller. 150w needs a good radiator. I switched from dual 4" haydens to a big momma from OCWC w/ 4 80mm panaflo L1As on 'em. I got those from Cole over at CaseEtc. Panaflos are really nice fans, and the L1As make like no noise. I'll be running them at 17v. That should yield a bit over 130 cfm. Anyhow, here are the pics.

Oh BTW... that is neoprene under the fans... it is just around the edge to ease up on the vibration noise.

The blue box is actually the priority mail box cole sent the fans in. I used it to space the fans about an inch from the radiator... makes for better airflow. I then covered it in a lot of blue electrical tape.

That looks really cool, have you fired up the fans yet? How much air does it feel like is getting through the radiator? With my 1 120mm, it feels like I lose a whole lot of airflow, I'd say MAYBE 30cfm makes it through.. I've been considering making a big momma sandwich with fans on both sides to increase the airflow..

Nice work Kevin!

Never thought about stacking my 2 BigMomas together like that. I'm a little concerned about inadequate airflow for mine using the sigle 120mm Panaflo L1's on mine.

Wondering if I should substitute for 4 92mm L1's. Would mean more $$ tho and I'm already breaking the bank on my project.

How's the airflow through the radiators with the 4 80mm L1's Kevin? How's the noise as well?

Its just one big momma. I spaced it away from the fans to increase airflow slightly.

4 92s? That'd be huge! These 4 80mms are the biggest I can fit on the back. This case BARELY closes now... Good luck w/ the 92s. That'd be cool.

Dunno. Haven't fired 'em up yet. I'm going to have a fanbus that gets 17v. It will attach to all 4 fans back there, and because all 130+ cfm is ducted through the radiator, i'd assume that the airflow is pretty good.

Well fire them up! Grab an old AT power supply, and plug them in real quick, we'd really like to know how it flows.. BTW, Doesn't it seem like running H1A's at 12v/7v would be better than running L1A's at 17v/12v? Better life span, better on the -5 leg on your power supply...

Hey kevin, you up for selling one of those Haydens, or trading one for something I might have? LMK (edit) Are those fans on the big momma, are they blowing into the radiator or are they sucking out? It would seem like you would rather suck air out the case (/edit)

Kevin:

Ahh, it's a spacer. That explains the thickness I see.

Crank that thing UP! I wanna know how loud it is! Try just running them all off the 12V line for a test and see...

Chill . I gotta get the fanbus first. I have an old AT psu actually right here in it is pretty damn tempting to just fire 'em up right now . I wanna take it slowly and not **** anything up though.

Yeah. You're probably totally right about this. However, noise is a big consideration with this machine. The L1As are 21 db-A on the 12v line. The H1As are 35!

Sorry. I sent the two haydens back to Chip as they were unused.

I'm actually blowing in. The air outside of the case is significantly cooler than the air on the inside. So by sucking in, i'm pushing cool air through the radiator instead of case-temp water. The difference is pretty small, but it is there.

I might think about redoing my entire watercooling setup from the inside out. One of the probs I have been having is that the In-Win is too small for watercooling. I want to get a better mag drive (700GPH) and a Big Momma and put it all in a YY Server case like kevin is doing. My question is: How is that big momma mounted to the case? Do those screws in the fans go all the way to the radiator? Im sure you are going to have an Article right????

mother of mercy. . .

why are you trying to get pumps to push water faster? for effective cooling you want a slow, powerful pump, idealy something that pumps 150-200gph at 6-10psi would be the way to go. Slower moving water generates fewer, smaller, eddies for hotspots to work up in. They also allow for the water to absorb more heat when it passes through your blocks and dissipate more heat when traveling through the radiator. on top of all of that they will be more quiet.

I'm gonna have an article... just don't know how much stuff to do before I write one. If I do an article just on this radiator, that'd be w/out much content. I think i'll wait til the cooling system is finished. Then i'll go in depth on everything. As far as how the radiator is mounted.... this is kinda weird . The thing is the perfect width so it just sorta wedges in there w/out much problem. I'm gonna eventually get two long bolts and bolt it in there a little better, but surprisingly, this works great!
