Snap 410 possible failed Motherboard

Hello all!

I need some help.

I have a 410 with 4 250gb drives in a Raid 5.

One day it spontaneously rebooted. I checked the logs and found no errors. Raid was fine and did not rebuild. 24 hours later, it rebooted again. I checked the logs and found no errors, Raid still showed green and did not rebuild. An hour later it froze and stayed that way for 2 hours till I cycled the power.

Now I have a green power light, amber status light, and slots 2 and 4 have amber status lights.

I powered down and removed all the drives, labeling each one a with slot number. I powered back on, and still have an amber status light, and slots 2 and 4 are still amber. I assume the the raid chip has died. I have about 70% of the data backed up, but would like to recover the remaining 30%.

Can I move the drives to another 410? I can get a used one off Ebay.

What other options do I have?

I can't say what other options you have as i'm not an expert, but you should be ok (AFAIK) to move the drives to another 410 to recover the data. I don't own any 410's at the moment but i do own several similar GOS units and i have swapped drives between unit's of the same model and they are usually ok.

They grumble a bit because of server numbers not matching etc but usually after a couple of re-boots and the like they usually settle down.

Look at it this way, if there is no better solution offered here then you have nothing to loose because your data is lost anyway.

I would wait a while first incase there are some proper solutions offered here.

Regarding the failure in the first place, it could be something simple such as failed RAM or bad connections, dirty contacts etc. I think, if you can get hold of a second 410 for a reasonable price then it gives you some options for parts swapping or to replace the faulty unit with later on.

The most important thing is the safety of your data, so think wisely first before acting.

Ofcourse there are recovery specialists who can recover data from snap servers and raid sets but they are usually very expensive. In the order of thousands not hundreds of bucks. How much is the data worth i guess you have to ask yourself.

Sorry to be of so little help, hopefully others may be able to add more?

Pendarus, you joined 2 years before me, and yet you only have 2 posts. Why should I bother to help you? I see it as a waste of my time to help those who are self centered and won't participate beyond helping themselves.

And BTW, yes, there is an answer to your question and a specific way it has to be done to be sure to save the data. I sure hope one of your other fellow lurkers knows how and steps forward with the information for you.

Considering that my first post was to help someone with a question, and that I was the only person that attempted to help them, I would hope I could get a question answered in return.

By the way, I don't lurk here. I found this forum years ago when I bought my first Snap. I wasn't into hacking Snaps so I didn't have anything helpful to add. I answered one question and moved on.

I will doing some more research before I attempt moving the drives. I have a used 410 on the way, should be here on Monday.

You're welcome, sorry i can not be of any more help but i have limited knowledge and experience.

I think though that a second unit is always usefull particularly in situations like this so hopefully it will work out ok for you.
