Default Is Vapochill really worth it?

Good lord $700.00 US is a lot of money, however, I just sold some stereo equipment and my birthday is coming up in less than a week so I'll have an augmented cashflow for the time being.

Do you think laying down that kind of cash is really worth it? How much of an improvement would I see over watercooling? As it stands now, I'm either going to put together my own WC setup, or perhaps get a Vapochill. I don't think I'm up to the challenge of building my own phase change system.

if you want something better than watercooling, but dont want to spend that kind of $$$ on a Vapochill, get yourself some pelts and lotsa closed-cell foam...and a beefy PSU :P

Hmmm... how many pelts would I need to equal the performance of a phase change system though? Also, wouldn't I have to do some hardcore insulation if I had a ton-o-pelts? That sorta makes me nervous...

i dunno if it'll come close to a vapochill, but 1 strong pelt (170+watts) should easily take it below 0.
here is a good condensation prevention guide from OCtools.

You will with a Vapochill to. Anytime you drop temps below room temp you will want condensation prevention. Anyway $700 may gain you 100mhz over strait water cooling(maybe), but that is not very much for $700!!!! How much does a 100mhz CPU cost these days? a Dollar!!!!

Yes 700 bucks is a lot, but if you have your heart set on a vapochill style cooler, maybee this might help. This place has a vapochill clone(and you dont have to get that lame case eaither). I know $450 is still a hefty sum, but hey, its better than $700. Plus it looks cooler.

One problem, is these guys arnt shipping yet. They are waiting for at least 30 people to preorder. But you better get in quick, last time i checked, they only needed 14 more orders.

That thing looks sweet. The only thing holding me back (aside from a lack of money) is that I would like to see some numbers. I know it is supposed to be competitive with the vapochill, but I'd still like to see what sort of cooling we can expect from the device.

it isn't worth it, you can buy your own gear, and get better performance out of it, and be cheaper

So the general consensus is...

a.) Go with a watercooled setup for MUCH less money and live with the slightly lower overclock.

OR

b.) Grow some balls and go with a watercooled/pelt setup that's well insulated and get performance near that of the Vapochill.

OR

c.) Take on the daunting task of putting together my own phase change setup and get performance equal to that of the Vapochill. (This choice seems to be the most unlikely of the three.)

Sound about right?

heh...

I think I am competent enough to put together a water cooled system (thanks to what I've learned on these forums), and I might even be able to do the pelt thing (although I'd still need help finding the right power supply), but... I'm not sure that I could piece together my own phase change rig.

I highly doubt there are any phase change kits floating around online like the WC kits you can pick up over at Danger Den, but I guess it couldn't hurt to ask... Anyone know of a phase change kit?

Aristotle, you and me both. But i am actually considdering taking an HVAC course and trying to build a phase change setup of my own.

Would this be the propper aproach to getting into phase change cooling?

I would imagine it would be the smartest way to get into it, and probably the safest. Of course you have to have the time and money for it. Heck, you might even learn a skill that can make you a little money in one way or another.

yea, but the problem is finding the time. With school and work, that doesnt leave much time for getting HVAC certified. But Im looking and asking around the local community colleges and whatnot.

well wheres the fun in that. I would feel more proud if i owned a DIY phase changer than some phase changer i bought from some ac shop.

trust me, mounting it and getting it all setup will still take a ton of time

water cooling & pelt combo works great if you have the time to set it up so that u dont get condension, I've had my evap water & 120 watt pelt rig down to -18F but i've also had my mobo freezz over and lost two durons. i now just stick with water so i dont go under room temp , I'd like to see "water phaz change" the idea is that waters boiling point gets lower in a vacuum, how non toxic is that for ya!!

yes i know its hard to set up a DIY phase change unit, but i never said it would be easy, i just said it would be fun, and you would feel better if you did it yourself than just bought it from some place else. Plus, the only reason to get a phase change unit over a pelt/water is bragging rights, and you get real bragging rights from building it yoursaelf than by just getting some schmuck do do it fore you...but thats just my opinion

While it is definitely cool to say "Oh look at me I built this mofo all by myself" and yadda yadda yadda. There is something to be said for a Vapochill. If i think of all the H2O cooling parts I've spent money on, well... it probably pushes over that $700 mark significantly. And unless CPUs somehow switch back to slots (which I doubt they will), all you will ever have to spend money on in the future are different gaskets for the various CPUs. I think it is a good investment, just out of my budget.

And as far as the insulation issue, it is much harder to insulate peltier based systems. The Vapochill comes with a small pad that fits around the outer edge of the CPU. It is a heating pad. It actually generates heat. It doesn't affect CPU temps as it is on the outer edge, but it makes sure that the outer edges of the CPU gasket don't get cold enough to have condensation. I've always wanted to buy just one of those for my watercooling endeavors...

yea, i like the vapochill evaporator, but the rest of the system could be built on your own. Its just a standard phase change system, isnt it. I just wish they sold that evaporator unit seperately.
