Default approach to building airtrap=)

I have a good air trap idea, I'll try to upload pics when I'm done.

I'm using a 1 3/4 OD, 1 1/2 ID acrylic tube. I also have a 1 1/2 diameter arcylic rod, from which I will cut a 1/2" plug for the tube, drill, and cement for the bottom of the air trap (outlet). For the inlet, I have a 2 in. OD, 1 3/4 ID tube, from which I will also cut a 1 in. section. Drill through both the original tube and this larger piece, slide (with great effort) the larger piece over the original tube, so I have enough thickness to tap threads/cement for another barb, and there you have it

Again, that might sound confusing, sorry, but I'll have pics up soon hopefully

any suggestions, tho?

oh, and sorry if this was someone else's original idea

That sounds like a great idea...now where are you going to get the supplies to do it with from?

Where did you fin 1/4" wall acrylic tubing? USPlastic only has 1/8" wall.

Using rod for the plug ends is a good idea. I had planned to use acrlic sheet for the ends. Anyone have experience with acrylic cement? I've seen it used on clear case projects, but does it form a water tight seal?

damn, usplastic only sells certain stuff in 6ft sections. I will definitely not need 6ft of anything, and 6ft of acrylic rod gets pretty expensive. Where else can I buy stock acrylic, preferably in 1 ft lengths?

Thanx

they have 1/2" tubing search for Acrylic Extruded Tubing, Heavy Duty.....their 1/4" stuff is under Acrylic Extruded Tubing 1 1/2" to 6"......also my next tube is gona have the cut out circles that usplastics also have and some plastic weld #14 (its capilary glue so it better be water tight or theres something wrong with physics)

kibbler,

If you don't find a supplier that sells in smaller increments (if you do please let me know), we may be able to work something out. I plan on ordering a few things from USPlastic. I could buy 6 ft and send you the amount you need at cost plus shipping to you. I'd have to pay the shipping to me anyway.

just be sure you mount the air trap at the highest point, or Joe will force you to read the cooling tech explained article! :->

if you need pic hosting, I can provide.

I knew it, been there done that. Good luck finding anywhere that'll sell you 12" segments. Lord knows I've I've tried to no avail.

Why don't more people use PVC? Its cheap, easily available and comes already tapped (just add barbs).

Sure you can see through it, but who actually needs to look at an air tap anyway? Its still going to work just as well.

that's y I use a dubro fuel tank.
it's small cheap and sealed.
it was easy to add 2 nylon barbs to it.

I imagine it's the same reason people use acrylic tops on waterblocks, clear tygon tubing, etc. It just looks cool.

mcduffiem, that sounds like a great idea!! First of all, we should make sure we're getting the same items. If you want to go ahead and do this, I'll list my dimensions again:

1 1/2 in. ID - 1 3/4 in. OD acrylic tube

1 3/4 in. ID - 2 in. OD acrylic tube

1 1/2 in. diameter round acrylic rod

I'll need at most 1 ft of each. Let me know if this is cool, then we can work out shipping/cost, etc.

Actually, on the usplastic site, there's something called tenite butyrate tubing available (I believe this was mentioned in another thread). Stuff's a lot cheaper than acrylic. Anyone used it before? How does it compare to acrylic?

There may be a problem. My design would only involve the 1-1/2 - 1-3/4 tube and 1/8 sheet in a circle. 6 foot of the two other materials would just raise the cost too high.

Sorry,

Mike

That's actually what I had looked at first, not thinking to look under acrylic first. The potential problem is that the thickest wall size available is 1/8 which might not be thick enough for the barbs to mount properly.

mcduffiem

actually, that's okay. If you're still up to the offer, I could do very well with 1 ft of 1 1/2 ID 1 3/4 OD, so scratch the other two items. I'll probably just buy acrylic discs or rods on my own, then, but still, the tube is a good start. How about it?

Thanx
