Default a Beginners questions

I have a question, I posted it in the Bit forums, but I thought that I might get more responce from the "masters" of watercooling here (no offence Bit-Tech guys, it is just that these guys have been doing it longer ).

I won't reveal my whole plan (secret stuff ), but I need a coolant that won't freeze at sub 0c temps.

I'm also looking for a series of submersible pumps, they need to be about 100-150 GPh, and not very large.

Thanks

Use some automotive windshield washer fluid.
Have a look around in here. Cal is a longstanding brand name with many models

I guess you'll have to use more glycol or WaterWetter.

look for a thread started a few weeks ago by r0ckstarbob. I had tons of good info.

i dont think windshield washer fluid would make such a great coolant...id stick with a mix of antifreeze and distilled water (maybe a 25%, 75% mix. it depends on how cold the coolant will get).

go read r0ckstarbob's thread ... windshield washer fluid is usually 33:66 methanol:water, which he claims outperforms glycol & WW based solutions.

Actually windshield washer fluid is the best. It contains methenol 33% & water 66% for a freezing point of -37F compared to a glycol/water mix has a freezing point of -20F. The viscosity is better also meaning the flow rate won't slow as much as antifreeze when it thickens at extreme temps. Pure methenol has a freezing point of -144F and pure glycol is -72F. Hell I've used it many times as an additive to mortar when patching up basements in the middle of winter.

I actually switched over from straight distilled water. Didnt notice any significant differences in temps. But now, I can stick my computer outside next winter for a nice -5c ambient

and another plus is that alge wont grow with methanol (i dont think anyways)

way back in the day, at the dawn of water cooling. many of us water coolers were using windshield washer dluid for the coolant in out systems. however, we used it for it's bio resisting properties and mixed it in with water. give it a try, it couldn't possibly be a bad thing to at least try. a galon of ww fluid costs how much.....$1?

Another question, I'd like to use some bl00 UV dye for the coolant (along with the blue or pink color usualy asosiated with windsheild cleaning fluid). I've heard that bl00 dyelite is not good, but I want to see for myself, does anyone use it/have pics of someone using it?

If blue dyelite is not good, are there any other blue uv dyes?

Thanks for the tips about the windsheild wiper fluid, I'll most definately use it if/when I ever get this off the ground and flying

go for the methanol:water mix, for the pumps just go with rio's, as you're buying several, reliability won't be too important, whereas price will be

WSW fluid is the top as long as it is 33:66 ethanol/water.
Beware though, some fluids have additives such as soaps, avoid them carefully (unless you want a foam/bubble generator)

As for the pumps you cash out the extra bucks and take Eheim pumps. You will never regret it.

are Eheim pumps submersible and small? Those two are a must, as there will be no room for nothing else.

Yes, Windsheild cleaner usualy does have bubbles in it, but you can get it without it, I think. I don't think that soap is a good heat conductor, and I don't think the pump(s) would like it LOL

Thanks dude! You found my UV dye!

I need a pump that is under 4" wide, or that is less than 4" deep and can be layed on it's side. I wish to contain them in the resavour (can't spell ), because I don't want piping everywhere.

I was talking with a car nut about the windshield wiper fluid, and he told me that it would work fine, until it coroded all my fixtures away.

Is there any truth to this?
