What happened to bong cooling? I heard a lot about it for a while, but then it just kind of died out. So what happened? Is it just not worth the trouble? Does it not cool as well as a "normal W/C setup? Was it just a fad? I'm thinking about building one, but I was wondering if I should save myself the time and expense.

People are still using bong cooling, but it has some obvious disadvantages:
-- Doesn't work in humid regions -- Not portable, and won't fit in a case. -- Can make the room stink like a swamp. -- Need a more powerful pump. -- Water needs regular replacement. For the expense and bother, I'd rather get a water chiller or go TEC. Hope that helps ![]() |

well, it'll cool the water below ambient in most cases, but its your call if you want to put up with the hassles pointed out above.

I think a 1048 would be too weak, but you can try it. You can prolly achieve a few Celsius below ambient, spending on relative humidity, droplet size, flow rate, and the height of the bong. It would probably work better in Arizona than San Diego ( I grew up in Encinitas

Below ambient? At this point, I would just be happy with my CPU temp matching my "system" temp. It a bong would get it below ambient, I think I would nut!!!

Sorry Chazz! I meant that it would cool the water below ambient temp, just to clarify

That's OK....I would think that if the inlet temp was that cool then the CPU should be close to ambient, which would be great! I would imagine that the humidity wouldn't come into play. I'm not too close to the beach or anything. Usually it's around 65%, and I grew up in SC where the humidity was usually around 90% or higher.

well the bong will work up to 100% humidity so i doubt it will be a problem, UNLESS it just so happens to rain in your room
![]() i think the reason to lack of post was not lack of interest at all, but more of lackt of anywhere to go. After the water recycling bong had been built it just had no where else to go. im hoping as well that a 1048 wil work, Looking back getting that swiftech kit was a bad idea. Good luck to your efforts. If you need any discriptions of designs ive got them memorized and im sure people who actualy built them will help too. |

-- Doesn't work in humid regions ...they do
-- Not portable, and won't fit in a case ...they can -- Can make the room stink like a swamp ...only with additives -- Need a more powerful pump ...yes -- Water needs regular replacement ...no Bongs cool water below ambient, make a nice noise, and are low maintanence if designed correctly. [h]ard|core has his bong tweaked really heavily now, it works like a complete dream, uses so little water, and cools great.

Bongs "evolved" into vortex cooling - there was a thread here about it. Like other ppl said everything has been done with bong coolers. Now the hardcore crowd is in vortex and still, i think someone just made the ultimate thing in that domain.
I dont have the link here though ![]() The guy built a huge vortex cooler (2m high) and got spectacular results. |

I'm currently designing a ground-up theme case that will have built in evaporative water cooling (essential to the theme in fact) this will be my second custom case with built in evaporative water cooling. previous case [edit] Oh, in the exprimentation I've done with medium sized vortex/twister's, the spiraling water column does little cooling, nor does it "suck" air up the twister to any signifigant degree, it's only the conical spray of water that exits the bottom that is really usefull for cooling, though that just means that the whole thing is essentially just big pretty shower head...unless you make a 2m high monster that sounds like niagra falls ![]() Last edited by Volenti; 06-14-2002 at 08:41 AM. |

Another watercooled San Diegan checking in.....
Just received shipping confirmation on my Drift.08 TEC.Going to setup up a chiller with a simple, seperate watercooled loop to cool the TEC and of course, the chilled side cooling the main coolant to the TBird. I expect 2-3c below ambient coolant temps.

Scanned through the encyclopedia that was Pepsi's thread...
wow.... ![]() I don't mean to break any ground. I've been overclocking for a while, but am still somewhat of a n00b to "alternate", i.e. water, cooling. I just want to get the best that I can out of my WC system. Everything I've seen says that bongs are shit-hot, so maybe I just need to take the plunge. I guess it's time for a trip to Home Depot!

You just can't do that with water and expect silence, quieter than what you would expect for it's size mabie? |

Yup thats what he described (cannot remember the exact wording) - for its size it's "damn quiet" and "soothing".
Anyways Pepsi has dropped a message in which he promised even more fun when he's done with his current job. |

has anyone experimented with very large heatpipes? I was thinking that if you could make a large enough heatpipe it might keep up with a bong, but without any required maintenance.
IMHO, I think using an evaporating chamber filled with aquarium wet/dry media & a fan blowing through it sounds promising. Here's one example: Typical wet/dry filter media is designed to give large amounts of surface area & long air/water contact times in a very compact volume. Having owned many salt-water aquariums with these filters, I know they result in huge amounts of evaporation (my 0.25cu ft chamber evaporated 2 gallons a day & I only used a tine aquarium air pump, not a fan:-). They also operate very quietly because the water slowly trickles through. Although I haven't heard of this idea being used yet, but it may work well.

Just check out the links that Volenti provided.
In short, it's about spinning water to make a vortex. |
