Default Anyone want to brag about their supreme LAN?

Right now I can't, I just run a Netgear DS104 Hub for my three computers and Linux Server. They don't offer Cable or DSL or other form of high speed access where I live yet, so I just have it routed over interface ppp0 (which sucks yes I know). I am sure someone has a nice LAN to brag about. Has to be a home network though, networks at work don't really count.

in the works

well my house is noth'n but cumputers, everywhere. i just got ortronics 7 foot rack, 3 -48 port patch panels, right now theres only 6 systems running and i'm building two more "top of the line-till next month" systems. i have two ways i run,
i'm running two adsl internet connections with three systems on each "this is for unreal tournament online"
and for lan gameing i patch the three over to a 8 port switch, great ping in ut like 7.
i plan to try to get all systems pulling from the 2 dsl lines together, that has been a task. if not i'll keep two networks with a bridge between them.

I have a pretty nice LAN. I have a cable connection that attaches to a Linksys router/wireless accesspoint/4 port 10BaseT Ethernet hub. This allows the two PCs in the house which are far away from the access point to be networked wirelessly via 802.11b. The access point is in the family room and it connects to the iMac via a an ethernet cable. Also, the XBOX and Dreamcast are connected to the router. I really like this LAN cuz it is both wired and wireless. Plus, it networks more than PCs... Dreamcast, XBOX, Mac, and 2 PCs .

Kevin: Does that XBox connect to the Internet yet? I have one I see the RJ-45 link in the back, just don't know if it will plug right into a Hub/Switch and then out to the internet yet.

yeah the XBOX doesn't connect online yet. Although I have heard it is possible to play Halo online w/ Gamespy or something like that. I should clarify that while the DC goes online, the XBOX is just plugged in...

Well, I can't say I have a network like that. I don't have anywireless stuff up and running yet. The network for me consists of a cable connection going into a cobalt box running a firewall and beta IDS suite that protect my network. From there it runs into a 24 port 3com switch and hosts out my lovely internet to: 1 indigo 2 irix box, 2 2000 boxes, 2 linux boxes (7.2 rhat and 8.1 mandrake) 1 mac (proforma 550), 1 AIX rs-6000, 1 98 and 1 95 box. I am working on setting up a small distributed comptuer in the house with 5 comptuers. I plan on useing the nic driver that lets you use 6 nic cards slaved together as a single nic and run either linux or bsd on it. I just don't know what to do with it after I have it built. Anyone want to buy processing cycles?

What does putting 6 network cards in a Unix box have to do with distributed computing? And where the hell is everyone getting these RS/6000's from? Is there an RS/6000 giveaway going on I don't know about?

Well, by putting multiple nic cards into a box and slaveing them as a single nic, you elimiate your main lag in the supercomptuer, the connection. Even a gigabit card will not work a true gigabit speeds, so you make multiple 100 base cards (much cheeper) do much higher speeds.

I got my rs/6000 from the office for cheep

I don't want to be arguementive so excuse me, but if you trace out your connections you will see this one supernode will be the fastest thing on the network, but you will be limited by other nodes on your switch and you defently limited by your cable connection. By the way if GigE isn't fast enough for you, you hear Foundry Networks have already started shipping their 10 Gbps module boards for their BigIron 8000? Maybe that will satisfy your bandwidth problems

And I must change jobs, they only run Sun's and HP's where I work. Need to find some AIX lovers.

Nice compliation of Unix boxes there, I know "some" Solaris no AIX and "some" HP-UX, it runs our OpenView server at work, which totally rocks from the floor up.

I have a small network. All wiring is cat6, but for the time being I will be running 100Mb. It's basicaly my pewny server(http://mkosem.no-ip.com), my mom's crappy HP, MY PowerMac 8600, and my Workstation which can be seen in the most recent project @ My Site. All are interconnected with a linksys 8+1(8x100Mb,1x1000Mb) switch. I have a 1500/384k line from earthlink providing my internet access.

Mine isnt really worth bragging about.....

I have a genius 10 meg 5 port PCI hub card in my XP machine which routes to my p233mmx linux basharound box, my girlfriends 98se machine, and then a 40m cat5 going downstairs and out the window for me to use when im comfy in my hammock with my old p75 lappy, so i can cruise the net and read ebooks out in the sunshine

Other than that, ive got a 100meg card in my machine too for using at lans.

Got some plans to get an 8 port 100 meg switch and mount it inside my case for uber-l33tness

I guess I will brag about my lan since it seems to amaze people when they come into my apt.

The network is 2 8 port NetGear 10.100 Switches, on either side of my apartmet ( 1 bedroom, 700sq foot apartment).

The switches are connected via a 100Mb/Full Dupe link. One switch is in my living room/office/slackzone the other is in my main closet. Yep in my closet

In that closet if 4 servers. 2 are in BookPC form ( a 533Mhz Celeron with 512mb ram and 20 GB HD ( named Cyclone), an a 466Mhz Celeron with 512mb ram and a 8 GB HD(Named Monsoon)). Those are IRC, Email (via I-Mail server), Secondary DNS, ADS Domain controlers, WINS, DHCP, and FTP Severs. Both running W2K.

My main server( named Tsunami) is a Dual P3 450 @ 504 Mhz w/ 1GB of ram. It has 112GB of HD space ( 1 40 GB IDE drive for bulk data, and 8 9.1GB 10kRPM SCSI drives in Windows 2000 software RAID 0 ( for now. I have a Mylex DAC960 dual channel RAID controler with 64MB ram on it thats going to be hosting the array soon.) The server had a Quantum 35/70GB DLT but I had to sell that due to being unemp'd. It has 2 Intel server class NICS in it, and is based on a Tyan Thunder 100 GX chipset motherboard. It functions as my Print, File, AntiVirus ( Trend Enterprise suite), Web, DNS, and ADS PDC server. It also runs VMware with Novell Netware v5.0, v4.11, and working on getting V6 to work in it. I have a Slackware VMWare session on it also.

I have a 4th PC in there that I use as a test box for different things.

All the servers are run on an 1250Va APC Smart UPS

My Clients are the well known Dual Athlon box on the Thunder K7 with a GB of ram and 40 GB of 10krpm U160 HD's and a Matrox G550. The Pro/Mini box which is now my DVE and NLE box using a Matrox RT-2000 NLE card in it ( Brians256 was the VERY generous prodiver of that card) it has 512mb ram and 120 GB of ATA100 HD's. And a Duron 900Mhz with a Matrox Marvel G200-TV with 256mb ram and 40 GB of HD that runs as my TV set and a VCR to record short stuff onto the HD.

I also have my 3rd iOpener with a 20 GB HD and 128mb ram running windows 98 SE.

All are on the Netgear switches, and all setup with network wide policies and rules Via ADS. There is distributed AntiVirus on every machine when they log into the network, and 3 other virus wall's in place to filter anything that is coming or going through the network. I can promise you this, you will NEVER get a virus from me

There is around 300 - 400 Ft of cat 5 run in my apt

So theres my network

Edit: Heres the kicker... I gotta move all that to a new apartment in the next month!

I thought my LAN was impressive... props to Joe!

Okay, my setup...

Cable modem internet connection that tests (according to DSLReports) at about 2000/350, when it should be more like 1000/256, feeding it's 10MBit signal to...

Netgear RT314 router/switch running static internal IP's. The four ports are connected to 10/100 NICs in...

1) My system: T-Bird 1.4GHz on Iwill KK266 with 512Mb ram, 30Gb IBM hard drive, Radeon 64DDR, DVD-Rom, CD-RW/DVD-Rom. OS is WinXP Pro

2) My (temporary) webserver: K6-III 400 at 448, 128Mb ram, 28Gb total hard drive space (4+4+20, all Seagate), Voodoo3-3000. OS is WinNT4 workstation running Apache 1.3.20

3) My wifes work system: P!!! 800, 192Mb ram, 10Gb hard drive, ATI Rage 128. OS is Win98SE

4) My sons system: Celeron 600 at >1GHz, ASUS CUSL2, 128Mb ram, 60Gb hard drive space, CD-RW, Nvidia TNT-something. OS is Win98

I am building a new server, based aroung a Duron 933 (yeah, I know Durons never came at that speed; this is a 750 with lowered multiplier to run on the higher FSB) on an as yet undecided mATX board in a book-style case, with a large hard drive. To hook this into the network, I've got a 5 port Netgear 10/100 switch. OS is undecided, but will either be Win2000 or Mandrake 8.1

My Home lan consists of a D-Link 4 port router that has given me nothing but grief. A linksys 5 port switch connected via 50 FT of cat 5.

One Inwin Q500 - Dual BP6 Celly 366@550 (Network Server)
One Inwin Q500 - Iwill KK266-R Duron 900@1000 (Main Rig)

One Inwin A500 - Soyo Via Slot 1 Celly 800 (Webserver)
One Inwin A500 - Soyo +IV PII 400 (Printserver)

One HP Notebook PIII 800 (Girlfriends Computer)

I feel your pain in moving all that Joe, soon I will be doing the same thing myself although not out to Madison just a ways down from where I am now hopefully. Good Luck!

Wow! I second the Props to Joe. Not only for having a geekdome
APT, but for actually USING all that gear to the fullest!

Hell, I feel guilty for all the crap I have around here that's not
even turning cycles for SETI...I need to learn some damn
networking skills!

But here is my LAN. The web page is being moved to a new
server as I type this, but:
