If you don't have the transaction logs or a backup tape, you're kida screwed. If you DO have one of the above....
copy them to the exchange directory and then run edbutil. There are a couple other DOS utilities that come with Exchange, but I can't remember them right now. Oh, BTW....what version?

5.5
I have the entire old directory, the problem is that I can't get the original SID, so I get the no access error DS_E_INSUFFICIENT_PRIVILEGES or something like that. the exchange server recovery utility bypasses the security and extracts the info into rtf files.

You shouldn't need the original SID. I don't think. It's been a while since I have worked with excange. But, If you setup the Exchange server properly, whatever new sid it would create should have the proper access within the domain.
Tell me the whole story of what you did, maybe I can help more if I better understand what you have done so far. Are you running 5.5 on NT4 or Win2K?

it was 5.5 on w2k Adv Srvr . the machine was the PDC and Exchange server. it was the only server, therefore, when it died, no more domain.
