I know for a fact that I'm not going to Autozone and buying a heatercore and putting on my own barbs just because I don't have the time. So I thinking of either getting the core from Dtek or the Black and Chrome one from BeCooling. The BeCooling core is slightly larger, but do you think it matters. Which would you choose. They're both out of stock so it doesn't really matter which one I choose. Thanks.

you don't have to put on your own barbs... just use a hose clamp nice and tight... 5/8 is a pretty standard heatercore size... my heater cores are 5/8" input output, just get a reducer to whatever you are using... and if you are getting a Eheim 1250 the input is 5/8" already (output 1/2")

They look the same, however the one you'll choose will be:
- unpainted, paint is an insulator Unless you're building an "all-show" case. - less expensive than the other, including S&H costs. (hint) DTek have a nice shroud option... Last edited by gmat; 09-04-2002 at 05:09 PM. |

If the heatercore is slightly larger it won't matter, because a fan would have to push a lot of air in the extra space (the perimiter) to make a difference. The autozone idea is still best, and cheaper. As Tokamak already pointed out, most cores have flanged tubes, designed specifically for hoses and clamps. A few models have o-ring mounts, some Hyundai's (Canadian Stellar and pre 90 Excels) have a proprietary system, and the older Toyotas (so old that they were imported to the US) have a weird flared connection. But the neat thing is that you can look at the part before you buy it. You really can't go wrong with a heatercore. If you give me a size, I'll give you a list of car models. Just measure out the area where you want to put that core, keeping in mind that most cores are 2 in. thick, and that you need to account for 1 inch for a shroud, and 1 inch for a fan. |

It requires a bit of thought to fit into a case, but I really like the 1970 Blazer w/o AC that I have for the testbed. It is sized for 2x 120mm (or 1x172mm fans) and is single pass.

Chevrolet Blazer, 1970, w/o AC.
model# 2-275 (It'll fit for 1969 through 1972) It's supposed to be 9 1/2 inches by 6 1/8 (but that may not include the tanks), with a 3/4 inlet and a 5/8 outlet. It will also fit as the rear heater of 1973-1975 Suburban, Tahoe and Yukon, or as the main heater of the same models, w/o AC, 1967-1972. |

Well, I took the plunge and ordered a Dtek unpainted heatercore + shroud kit today.
Either way I should be very happy with the increased performace of my cooling system. Unfortunatly, I dont have time or even a workbench to make my own modifications anymore....... ![]() edit: pHaestus I must say that looks like a mightly nice setup you got there. Too bad I dont have enough room in my own case for one ![]()

I had one of those DTek cores and shrouds before. Danny does a good job with them and you should be quite happy with the results.
Somewhere Mashie had some pics of painting the sides and tanks of his dangerden core copper colored. It looked very nice. |

Well, I too got a DTek heatercore. But does anyone else who has this core think the barbs are really small? I have 1/2 inch barbs installed on the heatercore but the inner diameter is less than 3/8ths of an inch. My nylon barbs (from a different project) have a diameter of almost 11mm (12.7mm is 1/2 inch). Any one else think they are small, or does it not matter.

That's because of wall thickness. Metal barbs usually have a 1.5mm or 2mm wall hence a 12mm OD barb will have a 8mm or 9mm ID. Nylon barbs may have 1mm walls, i'm not sure...

i went out today and picked up a heatercore from autozone, to come home and realize it was 2" too big for where i wanted to put it.
big ben: i was wondering if any car uses a cube shaped core. i want to put this in my full tower, blocking the bottom 2 drive bays and the floppy bays. idealy, the 120mm fan would go perpendicular to the case and i coudl replace the drive bay covers with a fan grill. BUT....do any cars have ones that would work with this? the ones i bought would require me to mount the fan blowing into the side of my case...which wouldnt do much good. dangerden used to have a few cube rad's, but they are all discontinued now. any ideas? thanks in advance

Get a power drill and a vice and you can widen your barbs. I've done it and its quick and easy.

Will the bit even go in straight? I was thinking of doing that but I thought a drill press would be a better idea. But then, I'd have to flush the core from all the scraps of metal.

No, there is no cube heatercore for any car. They're all somewhere between 1 and 2 1/2 inch thick. They were made to maximize airflow. |

actaully, ive decided to keep the one ive got and use it outside my case. with the preformance i need, i couldn't afford to lose the flow with a cube, i realize now. thanks for the offer anyways.
