1)the whole opteron thingy is starting to make me feel itchy about designing a wb for it. ive seen some nice things on 3rotors site. i wonder how he got the dimensions for the socket.
2)anyone want to start some g33kness about how a WB for a opteron would differ from a WB for an amd? the hotspot for the opteron would be alot larger, so, the jet stuff we've been seeing alot of lately, might not work if the area is alot larger.

what about multiple jet inlets?
something like 2 in spraying at each other on the sides, and outs on the top and botom. |

hmm indeed, cathar pointed out to the problems of jetting a small die area. if opting for a jet, the opteron might be an easier surface to cool that way.

Currently the only thing holding me back from upgrading my CPU/MB/RAM is the fact that I can't buy an Opteron yet (well, technically an Athlon64 I guess), and since I'm water-cooled already theres no way I'm going back to a HSF in the upgrade. So blocks for these new chips is of great interest to me.
What I'd really love to see is a version of morphling1's new block optimized for the opteron (I prefer the 2-barb design over Cathar's 3-barb micro-channel blocks - and I like the clear top he has on it). And the bigger core means we should get more micro-channels over the area that counts, making the thin baseplates even better as heat-conduction sideways becomes less important. I think microchannels in general are the best way to optimize the two points I think are most important in a block: 1. Maximum surface area between water/copper to get heat out of the block 2. Minimum copper between the water and the CPU - in the case of a WB the copper insulates the core from the water - the thinner we make it the poorer job of insulating it does. |
