they're not. trying to buy a '76 porsche 912 in town. they're asking $3000 for it. the car is in decent shape, except it has 180k miles, and a siezed engine. i asked them if they were solid on the price, and they say "well, we bought it for $7k 5 years ago, and we had it marked up, but this is less than half what we paid for it, so we feel it's a good price".

well, considering i can get a 66 for $4450, or a 68 for $3500 (before negotiation), i think this is lame. hell, i can get one for $9000 with 50k original miles, concours-correct and a show winner. this is a 912 folks, not a '75 911 turbo! it needs paint, slight body work, some interior work, paint, and a motor! arrrrggghh! i'd have to invest $5k or more just to get it nice, and then even if it is concours-correct, it still has 180k miles on it! and it doesn't have leather, a/c, or any power options like the other '76 912E's i've been looking at have.

i love the classic porsches. i might have to drive a couple days to get one, but i might wait for a nice 911 instead. not extremely fast, just fun cars.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the engine is seized, it's just about worthless, no?

How bad is it? Can you just change the piston sleeves and get it going, or is the engine block useless?

I had to wait until I moved state-side to see a 911, because no one is crazy enough to drive one in the Canadian winter. 944's yes, 911s, no.

it pretty much needs the engine overhauled, or i could toss in a 911 motor, but still, probably looking at the very least a $1500 investment. most likely more, i talked to a local import shop, they are supposed to call me back. and that's talking if *i* R&R the motor. not a problem, but that's a lot of labor.

yeah, these cars if pristine can bring quite a bit, but these folks' justification and all are just wrong. they claim they have an offer for $2800, if that's the case i hope they take it, because i won't. i'll drive to michigan to get a nicer one, and older, for the same price.

180k miles! arrgh!

but yes, some of these classics are still worth a lot of money if they don't have the motor. but it _is_ a 912. with a VW 2.0L 4cylinder. the first generation 912's were porsche engines, basically the boxer 356 motor. the 912E is a VW motor, the same 2.0 from the 914.

the 912E is sort of a collector's item, they only made 2099 of them. but this one has no options. no sunroof, power, a/c.. blah blah.

kbb only goes to 1983, which the closest choice is the 911 SC coupe. they would rate this car around $5900 (the SC).

and that's for a 911, aka flat 6.

Old cars are worth next to nothing. Being extremely familiar with the auto industry (where I primarily work), I know that nearly any passenger vehicle pre-1985 is worth a couple of hundred max. The reason is that most of their life is gone, and even if they do run, they normally become a money pit unless they have been immaculately maintained.

Those are the only cars that are worth more, though that is only if the buyer is willing to shell for them. In reality, a 66 Porsche is worth a couple of hundred dollers at the most, though to a collector or enthusiast, it may be worth thousands. Value is in the eye of the beholder, and an antique with a siezed engine isn't worth shit.

Unfortunately, people think that cars are good investments (they are not) just like some people think computers will be worth the same a few years from now (which you know isn't true). A five year old car is usually worth 1/2-1/5 the original value, so why should an ancient beat-ass car that won't run be worth more than its scrap cost?

I had to rent a car this week, because my wife is taking some classes downtown. I picked up an Oldsmobile Alero, 2003.

Leasing is a great option for those that trade every other year to every three years. Anything more than a three year lease is a RIP OFF because you'd have equity at that point and the lease factor (parallel to APR) will RAPE you.

I know quite a few people who are happy leasing because they like being in new cars all the time, though you have to be VERY careful with the car, and once you lease it you are stuck with it until the lease ends (or you are upside-down in a MASSIVE way).

Overall, though, the best deals for price:reliability are in one/two year old lease returns under 20K miles: you can typically buy them for around 50-60% original cost, and they are new enough to get you some of the best rates available from your bank/CU.

Well, for those of you that might be interested in this, my brother is trying to get rid of his 914 that is in the backyard. He took the engine out and stuck it on a baja for fun and now needs to clean up the left overs. He is almost to the point of giving it away for free if you want it and love restoring old cars.

Just thougth I should throw it out there
