Of a completely technical nature of course

I had 2 fun technical things happen this last week:

1. I went and cleaned out my CD's... I was looking for a NIN CD to listen to while doing some PHP work on another project I am doing right now... and I couldn’t find it. So long story short... I ended up ripping through the mound of CD's I had and threw out close to 300 - 400 CD's, and took all my Audio CD's and converted them to MP3 in under 10 hours. Via 3 DVD-R's (they seem to rip best) and 2 machines, I dumped 190 CD's to top quality 256k MP3's (320K is overkill and really anyone who can hear a difference between 320 and 256k is using a shitty codec). Resulting in 20GB of MP3's now

and all my CD's are now in one of 2 200CD cases I picked up.

Since lots of the CD's were from when I was in High school they were scratched ot hell, so I also de-scratched them with a motorized GameDr thingy... worked pretty hot. De scratched 80 of the 200 CD's.

All my Data CD's are also nicely filed away also now filling up a 208CD case, and 2 48 CD cases.

2. I had my old server crash. I say old since its run 24/7 except to move for over 48 months, and the occasional reboot for patches. The server is/was a Dual P3 450 on a Tyan thunder 100GX mobo W/ Mylex DAC960 RAID controller, AOpen SV320 Case, 12x9.1GB 10k and 7.2k RPM HD's, 2 100GB IDE drives, and a Pioneer DVR-103.

The Board was back from the damn Quake 2 or Quake 1 days... so its old, but DAMN cool, and very nicely designed. I think its time has come though, I think the caps are prolly starting to dry out, and I am loosing the speed stability it had before.

SO I rebuilt it!... from the ground up. Put in a couple more IDE drives, removed the DAC960 and the external RAID tower, put in a AOpen 845GE Max Mobo, a P4 2.0Ghz CPU, 512mb PC2100, a Matrox G550 Video card, and that’s about it.

*note* the DAC960 is in that pic, it was removed soon after I found it didnt let the machine fire up while it was inserted.

I did add a Adaptec 2940UW to it to run my external DLT35/70 drive.

The server has now .5TB and I am planning on getting it to 1TB within a few months.

One issue is that the DAC960 wouldn’t work in the AOpen mobo... so I had to put the 960 in my Dual Athlon and feed all the data off the array via the LAN to the new server config.

That’s a link to the Frankenstein setup to get the array running temp as I got the data off it.

The fans on the PC are another thing I did... my Silent PC thing wasnt working out too well for stability... I think I silenced it too much and I was getting crashing now and then... I put my old Sunon's onto the HSF's to get some more air flow in there and it seemed to work good, dropped the Diode temp from 54C down to 43C just with that... Guessing the Thermo-flo fans just don’t have the backpressure to suck air thought eh Alpha HSF's.

But now my PC runs stable, my server is nicely rebuilt, and my CD's are able to be found

( and I got a shitload of MP3's on hand)

The server is being geared to be a Media server and one of the largest damn HTPC's you ever have seen

With the AOpen Smart Speed fan setup, the machine is SILENT when its at room temp. The IDE drives barely make a noise (compared to the SCSI setup before and the SCSI in my main rig).

And the server now eats 20% less power than my Dual P3 with a drive tower did. (monay savings)

The G550 was put in since it does excelent TV out, and the mobo is equiped with Optical audio out so I am going to wire it up to my Home theater soon. Via my Harmony remote I am going to control MP3 selections and such.

what are you going to do with all of your scsi drives? dump them on ebay?

And what codec do you use? With my own tests I concluded that nothing compares in quality to Fraunhoffer's. It's the slowest also, but not a big deal with a current CPU

LAME is a killer Codec, most people who rip CD's use LAME. Its fast and the higest quality I have heard. Oh and its free.
