Default Can pumps be run with the intake up?

I've been running my Danner#3 with the intake up for about a month now. Is it OK to do this? On another note Since I've had this pump it sounds like it's getting air in it somewhere. I have gone over all my clamps, fittings and the pump itself. I did seal the gasket with silicone when I first got it and let it cure. This is causing me to question it's reliability so I may replace it with the new Swifty one. I'd also like to run this with the intake up as well if it doesn't damage them.

Thats good to hear because it'll be replacing my Danner as I was saying. This way I won't have to change the loop any.
PS I saw your testimonial at Swiftech site. Glad it's working out for you.

Basically it all depends on how the impeller of the pump is driven by the motor bit of the pump. In a magnetically driven pump, there is no direct physical connection between the motor shaft and impeller; the driving force is transfered by magnets (hence the name...).

In a direct drive pump, the motor shaft is connected to the impeller and water is kept in the pump housing by a watertight seal around where the motor shaft enters the impeller housing. This is a less desireable setup, of course, but also cheaper.

As such a magnetic drive pump can be run in most positions, including upright and upside down, sideways etc. (but not sideways with the outlet pointing down, because that could trap air bubbles).

A direct-drive pump relies on its seal and is best run upside down, with the seal on top, so to speak. To run it with the inlet up means that there is more chance for gravity to assist water leaking through the seal.

The Danner and Swiftech pump (like Eheims, and many others) are magnetically driven, so they're all safe.

You should check your manufacturer instructions: not all magnetic drive pumps can be run that way.
