well here's what i've got going so far. i'm pretty happy, and i got some great deals. all my prices are in american dollars.
asus 17v8x-x mobo $75 amd athalon xp 2100+ $25 huge cheap case w/ 450w psu $35 60gig maxtor hdd $25 40gig western digital hdd $25 dvd-rom 24x $15 cd-rw 8/4/32 $5 geforce fx 5200 $80 creative labs live 5.1 $35 2x512 ddr333 $120 blue orb chipset fan(for gpu) $12 thermaltake cyclone 8 $15 good goopy thermal paste $5 my massive sound setup $250 (this isnt JUST for computer stuff ![]() 19" cheapo mag monitor $20 17 gateway ev700 monitor $10 (dont buy these. grrr, refresh rate is stuck at 60 no matter what drivers you use in xp) custom painted microsoft natural keyboard $3.5 logitech optical mouse $18 i'm currently playing with my fsb, multiplier, and vcore. the a7v8x seems like the best mobo i could hope for. i can set everything's speed seperately in the bios, including ram speed, fsb(for agp and pci), cpu multiplier... i'm having a great time, and currently running at a 2.0. not sure what my fsb is right now. if anyone could explain the difference between the t-bred and palomino it'd be much appreciated. any comments, suggestions, insults, whatever you feel like, say it here. i'm open for anything. i hope to install my custom water-cooling system sometime in the next two months(november or december), and see how far the 2100+ can really go. please drop any suggestions you have. this is my first overclocking experience. oh, i'm running at 39C at idle. |

Dude where did you find a AMD XP 2100+ for $25????
And if you want to get into serious overclocking later on with a nice water-cooled setup, you might want to consider an better PSU, and some nice ram (i am not sure what kind you have but $120 for 1 gig sounds like it is kinda cheesy) |

almost everything i have was used, which is why it was so cheap. we did some testing at the shop, and it's all legit, it all works fine. i also get a decent discount, because i work in this computer place. people come in with junk computers, like compaqs or hp's. normally the mobo dies in them, because that company uses crap parts. they can't screw up the cpus though. amd/intel makes those. no matter what. anyway, people come in with dead boxes, and just want to get rid of them and have us build them a new one. sometimes we use what still worked from theirs, sometimes we don't, sometimes it's completely unsalvageable(lightning, power surge, water, etc). that's where i got the hard drives, humungous case, cd-r, psu, and cpu. everything else i bought new or very-near-new. i just kept my eyes open, had money saved up, and made offers when they presented themselves. things work out pretty well that way, you know. i just bought the mobo last night, btw.
i have a couple qualms though. perhaps someone here can help. when i get the fsb up to 149, everything's all fine and dandy, but as soon as i try to bring it up to 150, the ram's bus speed drops down. WAY down. then i get this warning telling me not to bring it below 333 and such, and i was under the impression that i was going UP, not down. it has a configuration that allows me to manually control the ram bus, and offers 3 options before i get to fsb150. the 133, 166, 200 bus speeds, becoming 266, 333, and 400 respectively. they go up as the fsb goes up, until i get to fsb150. at that point i get dropped down to 320 or something close to that(i'm not sure at the moment). i can remedy this by bringing my fsb up to 166, but that causes serious stability issues. when i get back up to 166, it offers me all my options again. even if i bring down the multiplier, it's very very instable. any suggestions are appreciated. thanx! |

TBreds overclock more, have slight stock speed increases due to the smaller process, use lower voltage (less heat), and are factory unlocked. All of those are good things.

You can find out more about your CPU by using this: http://mp3.zonebg.com/cpu/cpu.php
That'll tell you if you have a A or a B core amoung other things. Having a B core is the better alternative - as you can get over 2gig easy and up as high as 2.8/2.9 gig on hardcore cooling methods. ~ Boli

Er, just look at the last letter in your stepping, dude. If it's an A or B ... well, you get the idea.
