Hey i thought i would let you guys know about the laptop I purchased. I ended up getting a Dell Inspiron 8500 Spec'd as follows
P4m 2.0 GHz 15.4 XSGA+ display 256Mb ram (to be upgrade later) 40GB 5,400 rpm 10/100 NIC 802.11G 64Meg GeForce4 4200 Go 24x CD-RW/DVD drive Seems like a pretty beefy machine but the kicker is that after rebate im only going to be paying $1293.60 I spent some time and money looking for good Dell coupons to help me with the cost. I had to buy a 15% off coupon for $2.00 but it saved me a few hundred bucks. If there is any interest i will write up a review on the laptop. Let me know if anyone wants it and what kind of info they want. ie benchmarks, usability etc...

I've got the same thing but with the 1.6g, plain DVD, and no wireless. With just the one battery in I can make it through Patton with about 15 min left on one battery. It ran 3DM2k for about 2.5hours before it shut down. I haven't been patient enough to try it with both batteries. I will say with the second battery the sob gets heavy. My arm nearly fell off in the DTW airport on a trip from AK to MO to MI.
It also gets really hot. My wife has some really drastic food allergies. Needless to say she spends a good deal of time in the bathroom. I put in Cat5e. She had a burn mark on her leg. It seems her leg fell asleep and she didn't notice the heat until too late. We now have a swing out shelf in the bathroom.

Very nice laptop, I'm considering buying one myself. Here in NZ we can still get the inspiron 8200 (the previous model with 15" screen, geforce4 go mx440, and two optical drives)
I see the 8200 has a big advantage in having a fixed dvd/cd-rw drive, as well as a removable bay, but the 8500 has a much better graphics card, is thinner and lighter. so hard to choose.

Hard to say. Here we only have the one option in the 8000 series so wasnt much of a choice for me. Plus the price was right. When I get it I will let you know what I think.
