we have customers who do, nothing really novel here - but a good heads-up for lid poppers
and I believe a similar problem can occur with the mobile chips (not sure ??)

the bottom line is that those who mod systems need to very carefully assess ALL parts for functionality after the mod
- and bear in mind that mfgrs are dealing with stock systems

I had a simular problem when i removed the P4 IHS.
I had to modify the WW mounting hardware to adjust for diffrence in the height.
as it was the block woudn't touch the the core

Are there mobos that are a problem and others that aren't?

I was planning on popping the IHS almost immediately after I went K8. Hoot's solution of sanding the cam lock works, but sounds at least a bit risky.
If certain boards had flatter cam locks, it would affect my choice.

I suppose I would downsize to 7/16" tubing in any case, given the 1-axis design of the k8 retention system and the potential torque of the 1/2" ID I'm using now.

not a mobo characteristic, its the socket
when the elevation of the top of the CPU is changed, so must the retention system be redesigned to reflect the keep-out area changes
this is how Hoot got snake bit

Right, but I'm assuming that the sockets 'might' be different among different mobo models/brands. If cam height is relatively universal throughout all lines, than modification of the cam or block may be mandatory when removing the IHS.
I'm surprised Hoot's findings haven't been discovered/published sooner.

I've seen slight differences in some Foxcon sockets, but not for AMD

the 'solution' for Swiftech users is to simply use the stepped bp wb,
but the modder needs to figure out first that he has a problem

IHS removal is not comon for K8 parts anyway, even among the more "hardcore".

No, not common, but worthwhile, assuming you avoid this pitfall.
Temp improvements (yeah yeah, measured at the voodoo diode) are reported between 2-7C w/o the IHS.

Clocking improvements? Not heard anyone get more than 80MHz from it (though cam issues may be to blame).

eh ?
80MHz only for popping the lid ?
I'm beginning to understand why so few do it

At best, many report 50 or less...

Did Hoot post dT for (with IHS) vs. (no IHS/fixed cam)?

I'd feel comfortable upping my Vcore with a decent temp drop...that might net a few dozen MHz.

I'm one of those that will pop the IHS every chance i get... the new Intels won't allow this anymore... Anyway, on about 6 P4's where i did remove the IHS, only ONE CPU showed a huge gain in OC ability and drop in temps, about a 10C drop and approx 250Mhz increase in OC. I suspect this particular CPU had a horrible IHS mount from the start. In all other cases, I saw about a 4C drop in temps with absolutely ZERO affect on the max OC of the chip. If I had an A64 you bet I'd pop the lid and sand/grind the cam.
