I would like to set up a peltier for the first time but am not sure exactly what to do. I see mention of brass plates and neoprene, and sealing the space is there any place i could get a newbie guide to learn or can anyone help with this?

To be perfectly and brutally honest, it doesn't sound like you're ready for it. Pelts are risky by nature, and difficult to pull off properly. It's not really a thing for newbies. If you still wanna do it anyway though, lemme know and I'll help you out as best I can.

Well it seems to me that everyone would have to be a newbie at 1 time or another in anything you do, yes i wanna do this and i need to learn more first what can anyone tell me about setting up the peltier? I know how the paltiers work. I have a big enough power supply. But what are the shims used for snd how do you seal the peltiers to the processors and then how do you connect a fan and heatsink to the peltier?

I think jastrckl is right...
I don't think your PSU is powerfull enough and I don't think you want to aircool a peltier... Unless you own a celeron or something like that. |

A 600 watt psu is not enough? Man you guys are lame. Do you just go about making up stuff because you don't know or do you actually not want to help people. Who said anything about aircooling anyway, I dont know which method of cooling on top of the pelt i would use.

What are the ratings of the PSU @ different voltages? And is it a ATX PSU which you also use to power the PC? And how fast is the CPU you own and how far will it overclock with just air cooling?

Go here for a good guide on insulation:http://www.octools.com/articles/socket_condensation/intro.html
If you post some more information on your system, CPU type, PS size, etc., the people here can probably help you more. Good luck. |

I dont have the complete specs of my PS it is the enermax 650 It is powering the pc right now. It is a P3 733 not overclocked and will not be for now all i want to do is learn how to get the pelt working. I have 2 sticks of ram 256 meg ram running at cas2 133 mhz. Gefoce 2 mx vid. The system should have plenty of juice for testing a pelt. No overclocking will be done till i get the pelt right all i want to do is learn right now.
Thank you very much JimS That is a very big help. This is what I was looking for. |

If it's a p3 you should be able to do something with pelts and air cooling. Most people go for athlons which you need to use water to cool a pelt on hence the reaction you got. If you don't say these things people assume... Something like an 50-80W pelt should give reasonable results with a p3, they put out about 20W of heat at 733 iirc.
As for the 650W being powerful enough, 650W is easily enough in and of itself, but a 650W psu doesn;t put out all the power at 12V, most of it is 3.3V and 5V, which aren't much use for pelts. The specs for your PSU can be found on the side or top of the unit. The 650W model in fact has a 12V output of 24A max according to their website. This equates to 288W, your drives and such will suck up some of that - running a 156W peltier off your 12V rail is pushing it a bit unless you have a minimal amount of drives. For a smaller unit suitable for a p3 the 650 is fine though.

Thanks, Im not setting this up strictly for the p3 its mostly to learn how to do it. What would my other options be for powering it can i use just a second psu for the pelt and how do i find all these spec for the psu i would use that you have here.

You can use a second PSU, but you'll have to put a load on the 5V line to get proper regulation (i.e. the right voltage), normally a 1 ohm resistor (rated to 5W or more) does the job.
As for specs, find the manufacturers website and look them up, the specs I used above were from www.enermax.com.tw.
