FYI
vBulletin isn't free

If you have a server YappBB is free and similar.

I am using ikonboard 3 for mine. You really need a My SQL backed database for a decent running forum with many members.

www.ikonboard.com it IS free and works out pretty good for me.

Yapp is My SQL based and uses PHP as well.
I'll have to check out ikonboard 3 and see which I like more :->

vBB is not to cheap, but not bad either, 160$ for a license isnt bad.

and the MySQL backend is nice. I knew nothing about MySQL before I got the server loaded with vBB and it only took 1day to get it up and all configured.

Here is another free PHP one: http://www.phpbb.com/

Here is an example of the newest version: http://www.tech-pc.net/phpbb/index.php

I really liked it and almost went with it but i had a previous version of ikonboard and it was easier to move my members over to ikonboard 3.

If you ever plan on having more than 1,000 member you will need a My SQL backed forum because it will lag nastily or your server host will get real pissed off because non My SQL used a flat file system that is very harsh on servers!!! My host will not let any forum software on that isn't backed by My SQL. So you may want to check with your host before uploading a non My SQL board.

Well you definatly want a Linux based server(Win2K server sucks). You need to have CGI, perl, php, and My SQL data bases available if you are going to charge.

Reliablity, fast customer service and tech support is a must.

What kind of bandwidth do you have and what type of connection?

Does exellent!!! I have a Xp1600+, at stock setting it put a wooopasssss on my T-Bird 1400. I had to OC the 1400 to 1660mhz to keep up with the 1600+ at the stock speed of 1400mhz. Both on identical systems with the Epox 8K7A and identical settings!!!

It is running on a exellent board aswell. The Epox 8K7A. I would post some benchmarks but that system is not hooked up the net and dosn't have a floppy hooked up.

AMEN!!! I have refused to have a floopy drive on my computer for over a year now. They must become true legacy hardware and DIE LIKE THE EVIL ISA SLOT!!!! Next thing I want is Parallel, Sieral, and parallel ATA (I want serial) to die. Legacy free is good!
