Default BlackIce Extreme preReview

ok.... no ACTUAL review yet.... its gonna be maybe a week or so till i can bench it against my SuperCube (using an ehiem, which should give you guys a better idea of what it can do.. but here are my temps:

Ambient: 22.5
Idle: 32
Max:35.5 (Prime95)

Now the setup is (all in series):
Inline Rio 1100 (420gph at 0 ft) to>
BIX to>
DangerDen Maze2 (on a 1.8v duron) to>
becooling vid block on a geforce2 running at stock to>
becooling chipset cooler on the kt7Araid...

also the fan isnt very strong... its just one slim 120mm 100cfm pressed directly against the front of the BIX... which gives a little less than 1cm clearance from the actual grill....

Did you just attach the fan to the BIX or did you tape off the parts of the shroud that were exposed. I guess I'm asking if you made a complete seal betwen the fan and the BIX. I've got a BIX with 2 fans doing push/pull for my rig. I just want to know if I should make a complete seal between the fans and the BIX. Thanks man.

nope... this was just a complete ghetto... i actually took a piece of wire and tied just the top 2 holes on... so the bottom is slightly off the mount.... hehe i know its bad but i really wanted to see what it could do... yet i didnt want to waste alot of time when i am gonna tear it down soon....

my real design is like this: a fan PULLING air through the BIX... and it is completely sealed... but it is a big sealed shroud that turns 90degrees to the side... so that the air comes in through the front of the case (through the BIX) and then right out of the side of the case.....

you would get better airflow if you dont mount the fans right on the BIX.... test for yourself... use only one fan right on the mount... blowing through the BIX... then feel with your hand where the air is comming through... and feel all the DEAD SPOTS!!!

if you mount your fans 1-2 inches away from the BIX... you will get much better performance....

btw... what kind of performance are you getting?

I've got a bunch of stuff going on so assembly is slow. I'll post as soon as I finish. Probably in a week. I'll post in the gallery when done.

I think your statement on the mounting is true. But I'm tight for space. That's why I used the push / pull method. Which of course you argue that one fan offset a proper 2 inches could do the work of 2 fans. Well I'll see soon enough.

35C full load is too low, I'd say your insocket probe is way out. Like 5-10C out at least.

it won't matter too much if you swap the rad out, the probe will still be out by a certain amount, but it is something you may want to factor in

actually is a DD5 slimline probe mounted right next to the core under the block excess plastic was trimmed off

for a pic of the placement: http://www.geocities.com/xdigitalchaosx/

3rd pic down

it was probably so low because i didnt give enough time for the water to stabilize (i had a major issue with my mobo at the time)... i will have everything done much better once i get all my stuff

hmm ok, that shouldn't be a problem then. Are you sure you have it touching the side of the core?

yup. used a little glue on the stem to keep it in place too....
but in reality the super cool tems are due to the fact that i didnt let the water stabilize

ok guys i got the first stage of testing done just on the BIX.... i tested with the rio1100 right now cause i just decided i wanted to see how it compares to a eheim 1250

Test Setup: Pump -> resevoir -> Radiator -> CPU -> Vid -> Chipset

The pump is the Rio1100 modified to inline

Radiator is the BlackIce Extreme with one 120mm mounted directly to the front, blowing air through it.

The fan is a Panoflow 120mm model H1A, 103.8 cfm, 41.5 dba

the processor is a Duron 850 @1000, 133fsb, 1.825v, DangerDen Maze2

The Video is an Asus V7700 Geforce2 GTS at defaults, Becooling vid block

Mobo is an AbitKT7-A Raid with becooling chipset block

OS is XP build 2600

NO COOLING PROGRAMS WERE USED IN THIS TEST

The DD5 probes were located:
cpu(touching side of cpu core)
Water(inside of resevoir with one layer of plastic wrap to shield from water)
AMBIENT(right at the intake of the radiator fan, pulling in external air)

I added 1 degree to the bulb probe readings because they read 1 degree lower than the flat probes.

Testing was done using Prime95 to max the processor as i found this heats the processor the most. I left the machine one for 8 hours to warm up. then i ran prime95 for 1 hour and recorded the temps for about 10 min till i got the highest. i then let it cool down for an hour and read the lowest temps for about 10 min.

anyway here are the results
DD5 temps:

*MAX*
CPU: 35.5
Water: 26.2
Ambient: 21.6

*IDLE*
CPU: 32.1
Water: 25.2
Ambient: 21.6

the delta on the CPU (3.6 degrees) REALLY doesnt sound right... but ive been maxin and idleing for a few days... and it is the same every time...

infact i even use Hmonitor to read the onboard thermistor behind the cpu... i got a 30.7 idle and 34 max at the SAME TIME i took the above temps, which is a 3.3 degree Delta
After an hour of sitting and either idle or max... the thermistor should have balanced out to a fairly acurate temp...

now i still have some more testing to do... do you guys want me to test out the SuperCube from dangerden? im not sure how i could make it equal to this testbeing that the SuperCube needs alot more fan power if you use it as is.... i could test the "mod" where i take off the sides and get a HUGE drop in fan resistance... and just shroud the same 120mm fan i used in this test??? let me know guys

yeah, I'd quite like you to test the DDen cube as well, it would be an interesting thing to see the differance.

Another idea would be to do airflow tests and see how that affects performance

i dont have anything to measure airflow... except what the fans are rated at..

ANYONE HAVE COMMENTS ON THE REVIEW?

I was meaning running fans at 5v, 7v, 12v, having two fans vs one fan

oh and if you guys want me to do anymore testing with the BIX and the rio1100 setup let me know... cause come wed... i get the eheim and i dont wanna keep swappin stuff in and out, i feel like i am contaminating my coolant when i drain it and put it back in.. just gives me that dirty "i need to reformat" feeling
