Default Peltier? Or not?

I know how effective a peltier can be and how dangerous using a peltier can be. I was wondering how many watts does an Athlon XP emit. Is there a way to measure it? It is recommended that you get a peltier that has a specification a little bit above what you actually need but if for example you have a 150 watt peltier and what you need is 60 watt its not going to perform any better than an 80 watt peltier. If I stack the peltiers, is there any sealing i need to do on the sides to prevent condensation or anything?

A 150Qmax pelt will definately work better than a 80Qmax pelt. Qmax is measured at 0C difference between hot and cold sides. At deltaTmax there is a Q of 0. This shows that a larger pelt will will produce a larger temp difference for the same load.
AMD's site has spec sheets with the power usage of its CPUs.
Stacking pelts on an AMD is STRONGLY not recomended, they put out too much heat to be handled that way, putting them side by side is far more effective. Also AMD and Intel and several board manufacturers have concernse about large temp shifts affecting CPU life. ASUS or ABIT went so far as to dissable idle cooling(where the CPU turns off while not in use thing) to keep temps more stable on some of their boards.

If none of this makes any sence then put that down to my fevered brain.

you need to get a 156w or 172w to adequately cool an athlon, the only way stacking pelts with an athlon would work would be a 172w pelt with 2 220w on the top

futRtrubL: Why would stacking peltiers not be recommended? Brad: Where can I get a good 220w peltiers?

Stacking pelts are not recomended as you will usually get worce results unless you use huge pelts with size increasing away from the CPU. The first layer needs to move the heat of the CPU and needs to be rated much higher than this load to get a good temp diff. The next level needs to move the CPU's heat AND the heat generated by the first layer (usually more than the Qmax if run at Vmax, pelts are very inefficient coolers (not to be confused with effective, which they are)) so needs to be rated much higher than this combined load. You can see this from Brad's setup. Getting this to work requires many pelts and alot of power.

Edward

PS I forgot to state what that rambling about temp shifts had to do with anything. ;'] Well in stacked arrangements there tends to be greater temp shifts than in a single layer system.

Brad explain why stacking a 172 watt pelt under a 220watt pelt would work but stacking a 156watt pelt under a 172 watt pelt wouldnt.

it'd work fine, but if you're going to all that bother, why not try a little harder for a 172 instead of a 156
