Flying to start college (oh dear) in a few days. Figured I'd need to bleed the system now, wouldn't want the collant to freeze in the plane's cargo compartment. Then I'd have to refill once I got there, and I don't think i'll have much time those first few days of college orientation to mess around
![]() So I bought a Coolermaster HSF (and a nice cheap anodized aluminum heatsink for the NB). Popped them in, everything's fine, a bit warmer obviously... except without all the WC clutter. Noise levels are low enough that I can't tell the different before and after. Case is a good bit lighter, too. I'm looking for legitimate reasons here. Sure WC'ing is badass, chock full of bragging rights, and fun, but is it really worth the effort to reassemble everything once school settles down? And I had so many more good ideas, too ![]() NOTE: Do a quick Ctrl-A, Ctrl-C before clicking that submit button, you won't have to retype if something borks |

Oh man, you BET IT'S WORTH IT! Man, I couldn't even image going back to earth where the mere Air-cooling newbies dwell! No really, it's worth the OC"ing benefits and heck for me I just like coming in, turn stuff on and looking at all my stuff thinking "hey, I BUILT all of this and it kicks ASS!"
DO IT! ![]()

Water Cooling is a major chick magnet at lan parties...
Thats why I'm getting back into after 2 years of being away.

I definatly see what your saying. I haven even finished my first system, but so far about nothing has really gone right, but once you get over it and do it, its worth it. Its always nice to hear peoples reactions when you tell them you have water running inside your computer.

Please explain what ppl & lan mean, unless its Local Area Network. Please excuse my brainlessness. You see I have only two brain cells left and they spend most of their time looking for each other and it's a real bitch when they play hide a seek. LOL!Thanks,

I'm not sure why you're even asking the question...
The WC gear will be sitting there... after you get settled in, theres no way you'll resist the temptation ![]() As for your other ideas, no Dremeling/Jigsawing at night if you're in a Dorm... punishment from dorm-mates would ensue ![]() ![]() |

Ok, for that, I'll give you your definitions. PPL=people, ...I think he means loves to freak people out when they come over. I happen to like that part myself. LAN=lan party...in this context. You are correct, it does stand for local area net, but he's referring to a bunch of ppl ![]() I hear you kibbler, my water loop is half torn apart, and the insulation is off of my plumbing on the chiller...and I'm laid up with a back injury. I have all the time in the world to do it, I can get up and work on it in short shifts, and I am 99% sure I have the chip that will take me to 2 gig this time too, but I just can't find the motivation. I'm running a retail AMD HSF right now, and a 133 fsb. ![]() |

Thanx guys, helpful and entertaining
Actually, I already made my decision, right after the thermal sensing fan decided to kick in ![]() Oh, I definitely know what you people mean. The word "gumption" comes to mind, for you zen motorcycle mechanics out there. I've built two wc systems so far, the first time, I was nervous as hell powering on the first time. Walking back to my dorm after classes, I used to hope I wouldn't see smoke coming out of my room. Thankfully, everything worked flawlessly. The BEST part was, at a demonstration for our (group of 4) collaborative senior project (we made an RPG kinda), I got to say "Hold on a sec, lemme turn on the water pump" when it was my turn. Heavy Equipment, sorry about your back injury, was it heavy-equipment related ![]() |

well to me, the bragging rights are not a valid reason to go watercooling. who thinks he will score more chicks, is in a universe where chicks love computers, guess they don't live in belgium.
the reason i went to watercooling, is that i could ditch my fop38, with 7000rpm delta cooler. chicks definitely don't dig that, they run away instead of ignoring your pc. my dad's got aircooling at +/-5500rpm on a less clocked 1800+ (volcano7, temp ctrled). he gets 48°C so, volcano is always at max rpm. i can tell u , my system is whisper quiet. one hayden rad, one audi rad in series; only one WB. so my ultimate goal is achieved. when i want 43°C i can make the fan's so quiet that my HD is now the main soundpollution culprit. so i guess for you a motivator could be to grab yourself an additional rad from a junkyard, and for +/- 20$ the modding frenzy can restart. afterwards u will drop about 4 to 5°C = more silent |

The only way to get chicks interested in watercooling here is to have it installed into the brand new BMW...

Thanks kibbler, back just started getting sore, and I kept ignoring it. Finally couldn't stand or walk. I crawled into the emergency room on my hands and knees two weeks ago, and they shot me full of demerol.
![]() Anyway, I went watercooling because of noise too, so it's only going to be a matter of time before I'm back at it...and I'm not even using the 7K Delta this time. No noise is good noise. |

![]() I started watercooling because of noise, and even my EBM 150mm fan is quieter than my smallest delta ever was.

Doesn't matter, they are still not interested in water cooling...
Yeah, same reason to go wc here...noise... I had igloo glacial 2400 on my xp and couldn't take it no more...cannot watch the movie on dvd because of noise...cannot listen mp3s and CDs on low level volume cause of noise...being an audiophile kinda... Actually, thanks to the noise I went DIY wc, and it was FUN FUN FUN!!!! AND THERE'S NO WAY BACK ONCE I TRIED IT. Really, didn't know it will be so entertaining building it. Happyhappyhappy

It's nice to be able to overclock in 5Volt silence. If the noise is fine and you arent going to overclock then leave the coolermaster on and sell the watercooling. You'll be able to spend the money on books/beer/chicks.

The last 6-8 months or so have kinda blurred the lines a bit. The Alpha PAL8045 and then the THermalright AX-7 both perform very well with low to intermediate noise 80mm fans, and so watercooling isn't maybe the necessity for quiet overclocking that it once was.
I find that, no matter how much I think I want quiet, I end up cranking fans and the voltage to get that last bit of o/c. Water cooling takes me further than even the best heatsinks can, and once you have your setup it isn't that expensive to stay ahead of the cooling curve. |

With my chiller on full (temp), and the fan throttled back to silent, all I hear, aside from PSU and HD, is the compressor hum (no louder than a fridge) at 1900+ MHz. Need to do some ducting when I set it up again, the 40C exhaust in front of the chiller sucks ass in August. It's welcome in January though.
Almost a 500 Mhz OC last time, and the HP Celeron 900 upstairs made more noise. ![]() ...I'll be back. |

Ok, system is back together.
Only half assed it together, changes are pending. Quickly learned that my ram is at the end of it's chain. I ran at 174 Fsb on my XP333, with good timing. As soon as I passed 177 Fsb on this board, I ran into problems. Backing the timing down to normal got me to here, but even with the Tt ram cooler, my DDR is frickin' hot. Might have to unlock and raise my multi for now...get higher cpu on a lower Fsb with aggressive timing. New ram for sure, once I get back working. Either way, it sure sounds quiet. ![]() |
