Again this is not an ad.
![]() Moderators: please let me know if this fits better in another area. DEAL: I was just reading storagereview.com, and noticed they had a promo going with hypermicro.com, where you get a bare LSI Logic ultra160 host adapter with any UltraStar 36Z15 they offer. The catch is that you have to enter SR-Z15 in the comments section of your order, don't forget that! <edit>After reading Joe's words of wisdom, you will need to get a terminator in addition to the cable, since the card is a whitebox model--bare card, nothing else.</edit> Get it here: www.hypermicro.com A pic of the adapter (or at least one with the same chip) is here(different vendor!): http://www.pcprogress.com/product.asp?m1=pw&pid=LSIU160 Here's the page for the 36Z15: http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/ultra/ul36z15.htm Good luck everybody! I'm off to try to talk the missus into letting me replace my old, clunky 9ZX. ![]() Last edited by Arcturius; 10-14-2002 at 06:33 PM. |

Nice! But you will need a Terminator. I have run and worked with SCSI for the last 14 years, and Termpwr is NOT the same as termination of the channel. No multimode (SE/LVD) drives come with full bus termination anymore since you need to have an Active LVD terminator for the bus.
But still nice! ( since I got like 5 ot 6 extra terminators at work ![]()

Not bad. I had to check out the SR review about the drive, and I'll pass on this one, but I'll probably regret it later.
Notes: drive runs very hot. OEM comes with 1 year warranty ($129), otherwise comes with 5 year warranty ($199). Prices are for 18GB unit, is also available in 37 GB. |

they are very nice drives for sure, but they just run too damned hot for my tastes, especially with only a one year warranty...
Although I haven't pricewatch'ed it, this deal probably isn't too good overall, bearing in mind you have to buy a cable, and have 4 years less warranty

![]() I did the legwork for you, and since the deal only applies to five different drives, I'll list them with the lowest PriceWatch price for everybody's convenience, and then I'll shut up. It looks like they're on the low end for price, but not necessarily by a lot. 18.4GB, 68 pin interface 1Y warranty: $129, PW: $126: Axion QuickSell 18.4GB, SCA2 w/68 pin adapter, 5Y warranty: $179, PW:Lowest is HyperMicrosystems by $7 36.7GB, 68 pin interface 1Y warranty: $229, PW:Lowest is HM by $11 36.7GB, SCA2 w/68 pin adapter, 1Y warranty: $199, PW:N/A 36.7GB, SCA2 w/68 pin adapter, 5Y warranty: $329, PW:Lowest is HM by $34 Moderators: please let me know if I'm overstepping any bounds by listing prices (or with this thread in general) |

Well, I got one a few days ago, and I must say I am very pleased.
The drive runs much cooler than I expected--by the super-scientific index finger method, the 36GB model runs about at warm as my 60GB IBM 120GXP. It is very quiet (much quieter than my 7200 and 5400 RPM Maxtors) but the noise it does make is very high pitched. (About 15kHz ![]() The controller is a LSI8955U, with a LSI53C1010 chip. The documentation I was able to find lists it as a single channel 64-bit 66MHz PCI card, but the docs also say the card is supposed to have a LSI53C1000 chip. It is supposed to be backwards compatible with 32-bit 66MHz PCI, but works fine (so far) in a 32-bit 33MHz PCI slot, for me. The card's BIOS shows two channels, though, and both Win98 and W2K install the drivers twice, once for each channel. (well, W2K does; Win98 hangs when trying to install the drivers for the second channel...) The card has one internal 68-pin and one external 68-pin header, but the PCB layout can accomodate another 68-pin and a 50-pin internal header. I haven't had a chance to do any testing to see if the installed headers are actually on separate channels (which I would doubt), or if I'll have to do some soldering to access the second channel. |
