ok, maybe this is a little off-topic, but maybe you guys can help me out some, i haven't found a solution yet, and it's a rather elusive problem it seems.
i'm having a problem with ide devices, primarily just with CD-ROM's and their counterparts. every once in a while, they have a tendency to disappear. not sure exactly why, haven't seen anything in system logs or what-not that would depict why. i recently upgraded to a biostar m7vib from a fic az11, with a fancy new 2000+ XP. i run a ata/100 card for extra drives, but that seems to work just fine. winxp of course, and this is with a fresh install. i had a kenwood true-x 72x drive that has been acting kinda strange (doesn't always come up in post, or comes up as some freaky characters), so i thought that might be the problem, so i removed it from the system, to try that. still having problems. is this some wierd problem with xp? has anyone else had this problem? btw, i'm also running some no-name 8x dvd, and a yamaha 20x recorder. i've had this problem for quite sometime, just thought it was the mainboard, maybe that cd. but shouldn't it go away if the cause is absent? before it seemed hardware-level, but now it doesn't seem so. help please ![]() i suppose i should add that it's been through a few system iterations... different cd-r, no dvd, etc... had problems then too. |

okay, something to add to this:
it seems that after the drive is unable to read a disc, or after a security check problem, the drive is removed from the devices of the computer. noticed this problem particularly with disc 2 or UT2k3. yay, indeed. |

My room mate just had a problem almost EXACTLY like that with his Philips CDR drive. HIs drive would just sporatically disapear and XP would not find it anymore. This also was causing his other drive attached to the chain to disappear as well.
He fixed it with a firmware update from Philips. My suggestion; First, update to the latest BIOS available for your MotherBoard. Second, find all the lastest firmwares for all your IDE CDROM drives and install them. Third, get all the latest drivers for those devices (IDE controllers, MotherBoard, etc) If that does not solve the problem, then we need to start considering a major incompatibility between your new MotherBoard and some of your IDE drives. Keep us updated.

well, so far having a little bit of trouble finding the firmware update for the cd drives. yamaha's site isn't very helpful, and having trouble finding the 'raite' dvd-rom files... just sale ads through google.
last night it acted up again. still saw the drives, but it didn't know that the dvd drive was a dvd, and it wouldn't recognize any discs until i rebooted and things were o.k. funny thing is though... all my ide devices are on seperate channels (motherboard ide + extra ata/100 card). i wonder if maybe that card is having troubles... although i never have trouble with any hard drives attached to it... ? hrm... i'll keep searching ![]() |

I have an old creativelabs cd-rom. It's fine with being slaved to an ide HD, and nothing else. It periodically disappears when slaved to a CDRW on the secondary channel. It causes lockups when it's the master on the primary with another optical drive as the slave.
Have you tried with just the cdrom as master on it's own channel?, ie no dvd or rw hooked up any where.
