Just thought I'd share my first ever go on a mill - which my Dad now owns.
This block was never intended for use, is just a rough design and measurments. I just wanted to have a go. ![]() http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/BL002.jpg http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/BL003.jpg http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/BL004.jpg http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/BL005.jpg It looks better in real life. For a start I don't think the mounting holes would fit with th channels like they are. Also channels arn't really optimum for 1/2" barbs. Was really only meant as a test mill. The copper block is 80x50x12.
I also forgot to mention that I got a lathe as well with a lot of tooling. (Tools probably worth near the lathe and the lathe is worth a reasonable amount). Bought from a dead persons estate. Among the tools are various things such as tools to put the rifling down gun barrels. The guy was a nutter, over 300 illegal weapons were found in his house, including 3 brand new colt 45's and 30 303 shotguns. |

That's a concern I share.
Then I remembered that pennies are made of copper. Do you know how hard it is to bend a penny? |

I found a link: U.S. penny composition
It seems that they were at least 95% copper, up until 1982, at which point, they switched to 97.5% Zinc, and 2.5% copper, which brought down the weight of the penny from 3.1 grams to 2.5 grams. Copper plating... that's why we never saw a difference! Verified here |

I'll take come pictures later of my next work in progress.
This time I used a sharp endmill and upped the spindle speed and it gives much better results (Stuff flies away as it should). |

thats a cool block.
have you ever cut a penny in half? unless you get a really old one, they are all silvery inside.

Ok, here we go.
![]() http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/GPU002.jpg http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/pippin88/GPU003.jpg The lips around the edge are to be used for mounting. The bottom one will have four holes drilled in it for the corressponding holes in my GF4. The top lip where above where the boltheads will go will be milled away. The top lip will have two holes in each sides of the block (8 Total) for bolts that will be glued in to make studs. Bolts used will be 8ba8 (I think) which is about 1.8mm (not sure). The lid of the block will be held on by nuts (onto the stud bolts) All clear? Also there is a smaller channel in the bottom of the large channel (Camera screen is broken so I cant get to macro mode ![]() The design came from the fact that I couldn't get the small collet for the small endmills to bite and hold properly, meaning I couldn't cut small channels, so I decided for an open flow block. |

I think I've borked this one, as I rushed it (Probably still finishable and usable but not really up to the standards I'd like) I am however going to go to my dads for a few weeks at a time during the holidays, allowing me to not rush etc. and do things right. I also just got a very nice machine vice that has the swivel about the base function. |
