Just wondering about removing the heat spreader from my P4. Seems the temps are a bit higher than they used to be on my old Celeron 900Mhz. I have a P4 2.6Ghz and have NOT overclocked it at all.
![]() Could is be that the motherboard is just using the thermal diode on the CPU itself instead of an external sensor? Under full load I am showing in MBM5 a temp of 45° C with an ambient room temp of about 23° C. The old CPU was only at about 38° C under full load with the same room temp. ![]()

1. Do you think that you old celeron uses the same power as you new p4???
2. Remove the heat speader would increase the perfromance in imo. Volenti removed his heat spreader when he did his direct die cooling

Removing the HS inn many cases leav a too big gap between the CPU and HSF that there will not be pressure on the core anymore... and thats a bad bad bad bad bad thing ![]() -P-

I am running water cooling. Simple Copper block drilled passages with a radiator and reservior.
This thread shows my old setup with the Celeron. I have since updated to the P4 utilizing the existing retention mechanizm. I did this by making an Acrylic block to hold the copper water block in place. Adding a shim to get the block on the core should not be a problem. A rough drawing can be found four posts down in this thread. I am using distilled water. Hope that answers some questions.

Well removing the HS will gain u anything from 1c too maybe 3c... and probably even more if u oc that chip. But if it is worth it, well it depends on if you really really need a 3c lower temp too keep you happy
![]() And if you still want the warranty on it, i would not reccomend it, hehe.. ![]() -P-

doesn't the use of the word direct already make us assume the heat spreader is removed?

That article was great... thanks!
I'll probably leave it for now and just shut down the system and clean up the watercooling pump and hoses. Maybe even upgrade the pump and see where I stand. Again, thanks for the input guyz... ![]()
