Default Ati Mounting Specs?

Im designing my own water block and need to know the mounting specifications for the Radeon 9700 series cards e.g. holes distance apart, mounting pressure, hole size.?

Here's some specs I took from 9800, seems the same as the previous 9700. (was mainly info to mill shim avoidance into my block base)

Mounting holes are just a tad smaller than M3 so an M3 screw / bolt would be a tight fit or cut a thread slightly if forced in the hole. On the mounting pressure you'll be limited by card bend if you just use bolts through the holes, (so don't over tighten). To get a decent mounting pressure you need a retainer that presses on the back of the PCB opposite the core. I made one that has a raised centre and used a mica shim to prevent PCB contact / damage. The "copper retainer bar" was bent in a slight "V", so becomes straight, (level), when tightened giving a spring retention effect. This is just an educated guess as to mounting pressure, but is far more than standard push pins give, not that it is of huge importance with VPU heat levels, as long as it is secure enough, it should be fine.

You may find an M3 screw will go through the hole depending on the screw tolerance, (how well it's made). I was trying some motorsport quality here that were tight. An M3 x .5 tap wont go either without either tapping a slight thread or forcing it, a 2.8mm drill shaft is a nice fit in the hole at least with the cards I have here.

I found exactly the same thing on my nvidia cards. The bolt would fit but it was very 'sticky', it had to be twisted in, would'nt push straight through...

Someone would get all those drawings and get em in a "sticky" thread or something.

Is the shim really needed?

oh and i found this on the swiftech website: -

Retention mechanism:
NVidia: 4 spring loaded 2-56 S/S socket screws, providing ~20 lbs of pressure overall
ATI: 2 spring loaded 4-40 S/S socket screws, providing ~15 lbs of pressure overall

FWIW.

A 2-56 screw has a diameter (at the threaded section) of 0.086", aka 2.2 mm, where an M3 has a diameter of (course!) 3.0 mm.

Seems like Swiftech's playing it safe, and specifying a screw that will fit all.
