My daughter is home from collage, and her puter is here with her.
Her's is a newer build than the one I'm typing & folding on. It has 512mg of 2700 Corsair with a KT 333 Soyo Dragon lite board and XP1800 with a slight O/C to 1.66 gig. Now I'm on a phone line 56K set up. What would be a low cost way to set up a network or routing so I could bring her system on line to fold. It's sitting doing almost nothing. Could more than double my output if it won't cost to much. But I've never tried setting up a network and know nothing much about it. Thanks for any help you can offer! ![]() PS: If possible would be nice to have room for a third system in the set up. I'm starting to buy parts for a high end system, though it won't be done for a bit. |

Cheepest way is to buy 2 network cards and a cross over cable.
total cost $30 put a nic card in each machine and connect the cable. using Win2k or WinXP. it has easy internet shareing cabablities... if you can't figure that part out let me know.

Actually, if your computer has a USB 1 port, and her's has a USB 2, you can get one of those USB 1 to 2 connectors and network that way. If you don't, then yeah, $30 is probably what you'll spend.

Just get some ethernet cards and a crossover cable, if you want to do 2 systems. For more than 2, get a switch/hub/router, whichever you want. Ethernet can be very cheap, just picked up a switch for $9 and an ethernet card for $10 with $10 rebate ![]()

Did I miss something or did BE say that both PCs were to share a single phone line?
As much as I'd like to suggest the hub/switch, I don't see how it'd help. |

Well if you have NIC's in each comp then you can get a hub and use a proxy server. I had 4 comps crunching D.F. on 56K for months before I got cable. Also you don't NEED it to be online to crunch. You can just switch the phone cable over to the other computer and log on every now and then and upload. D.F. will keep crunching away online or not.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
I'm going to check in to the cost of the cards and hub. Any suggestions on brand of cards and hub? Appox. cost for a set to do 2 now and a third in time? And depending on costs I can just set it up as Jaydee said. |
