Default Pump Question

Well, I'm finally getting around to building a watercooled system.

One of my most important requirements is low noise. I expect a huge boost in my overclock as my current HSF is a Thermalright AX-7 with an 18 CFM NMB fan.

I'm thinking about a Maze 3 and danger den z chipset block, though maybe I'll splurge and spend an extra $25 on a whitewater... what do you guys think?

The tricky part though is the pump. I was orginally thinking a Hydor L30. But I was at the local hardware store today, and I looked at their pumps. I saw what I beleive is this one : http://www.wholesalepumps.com/Product.cfm?DID=16&PID=70 though I didn't think to write down the model number. That one is at least a very close model, with the same flow/head. After shipping, it will be about the same cost as the hydor L30, but with twice the head it is very tempting. I'm concerned about heat and noise though. Anyone used this pump or a similar one? As long as its not too noisy I can probably have a bit of fun getting its noise within my limits, but I have no idea what it's like. Searching the forums didn't show much results.

That pump in the link looks really hot!

Really, anything that's got a better head, is better. You still have to watch the flow rate, but if you run a comparison with any of the Eheims (and we've posted the PQ curve a few times), I think you'll find that they can easily be beaten. As a reference, the typical flow rate is about 60 gph (probably with a typical 1048).

For our purposes though, the pump really needs to be of the centrifugal type, because anything else is going to be too noisy. Even then, some centrifugals are noisy. The Johnson pump that I posted about, has a small, but manageable "whir" to it.

I bought the pump today... here are some numbers from the box:

Shut off head: 12.2'
GPH at:
1': 300
3': 270
5': 240
8': 180
10': 130

so, when the eheim 1250 is at shut off head I'm still getting 200 GPH. Even if little giant is considerably exxagerating, this should be a great pump.

Its pretty small too, 4.2"x 5.6" x 2.8".

All it takes is a screwdriver to rotate the output barb 90 degrees.

It does take 47 watts though... I got a big chevy caprice heatercore though, so It'll be interesting to see how everything does... due to cost I'm just getting a Maze3 right now (since the Maze4 seems worse) but this thing should do great with a white water. and I'll find out about the noise in a few minutes.

Heh just tried it out... it was hard to get a good take on its noise because a. the concrete sink amplified the noise, and b. water turbelence was too loud. Especially when I started it with the outlet facing up and an 18" fountain sprayed water everywhere

The noise wasn't too bad, but quieting it down could be a pain. I'll have to wait till my tubing gets here to know for sure though.

Oh yeah, I hear you about the water turbulence noise!

I finished rigging up my two Johnson pumps: one of them had the same noise. I'll have to try both in series, just for kicks!

Nice going.

this seems an appropriate spot to ask, so, where can I get a cheap flowmeter? I'd like to know just how much I've got flowing through this thing
