Size of radiators

What size of a radiator would I need for a watercooling setup so that I didn't need to attach a fan to it?

I have access to a lot of car radiators (almost any shape and size). Does anyone know how big a problem would corrosion be if I used Al blocks. I have some Al pieces available and don't really want the additional hassle of getting Cu.

I'm planning on cooling my Athlon 1800+, a GPU (when I get a decent one, still running a TNT2 ) and possibly also my PSU.

Heatercore size should be about 12cm - 15cm square, larger if desired

You could get an Alu radiator, but I would recomend copper blocks.

dr_zukov,
i run a P4 2.53@2.9 and also cool my GPU as well with the same loop, both copper Danger den blocks.

I then run the tubing out of the rear of my case across the other side of my bedroom and on top of my wardrobe. The total loop is about 7 meters. I drive this with the tiny Eheim 1048 pump.

My rad is passive and aluminium and i have had no corrsion in the 3-4 months it has been running!! It is definetlay do-able. To prevent corrosion i have been using a car engine coolant(with anti corrosion inhibitors)/soft water mix.

Onto my rad, as im sure that's what you are interssted in, is from a Ford Fiesta and cost me £1 brand new on E-bay, im sure you will know that car being in Europe. Note it is the main radiator, and not a heater core!!

With the above mentioned system, the max CPU temp i have had is 50 degrees C with an ambient of around 36 degrees C under full load, it only drops to about 40 degrees idle thought. Certainly OK for the complete silence!!!

Here are two Links, the first is a post on my "local forum when i first set it up (a lot has changed since then).
The second are some pics of my initila setup. (again, it is now very different)

Thanks for the help.

In every post here people seem to have huge fans attached to their radiators. Glad to see I can do without one.

I already have a huge one set up. I'd like to attach it to the side of my Chieftec CS601 case so that it would cover the entire side. Would there be any problems with it being flush with the case? I'm a bit concerned that there might be a problem with the lack of airflow through it. Though considering it's size it should still be more than enough.

Any thoughts?

I posted here. I have a cheiftech/antec (same thing) case. I have an internal heatercore. It must have a fan in this config. The only question I have to you is: If you mount it to the side, where is the airflow going to move through? The case will block it all.

Why not use a fan? Your cooling is going to be directly proportional to the airflow through that rad. That case of yours can hold a rad, you just have to use a drill and pop some rivets and make some holes.

Thing is, I sleep in the same room as the computer is in. The noise of the fans is deafening. I actually considered shutting off my computer to get some sleep.

The main thing I want W/C for is not the added cooling but silence. In the final stages of my evil masterplan I want to also silence my HDD (somehow).

The lack of airflow is troubling. What if I mounted my radiator a couple of cm away from the case to allow for at least some airflow? Or does anyone have a better idea how to mount a passive radiator?

Or you could place a radiator near a small box fan. The box fan on low wouldnt give off much noise and would help cool the room, and blow on your radiator.

Don't woory about the airflow, if you have a big rad like mine it doesn't matter!

Mine sits flush against an internal wall and recieves NO airlow whatsoever, it still dissipates heat though, obiously better if there is a fan but there is no need if all you want is silence like me.

The only fan i have inside my room is the PSU, and that will be added to my loop within the next few months. I have no case fans, northbidge fans or anything else!!

Just go for it, you can always keep an eye on temps to see how it performs,

I would LOVE to see the temps on that thing, vs a heatercore w/fan.

Wouldnt you need a good pump to account for the longer hoses to the rad?

I have attached an image of my current temps, ambient is 25 degrees. Saddly i don't have a heater core to do a comparison against though! I could blow adesk fan on it for fun thought to see what difference it would make!

With regards to the pump, i guess a higher flow rate would drop tempuratures a bit, but the water does flow around and it has never cut out, and soesn't feel overly warm to the touch, so i guess it is ok! A larger pump would make more vibration anyway.
