Just wondering if anyone has any experiance in removing the metal sheild with teh nVidia logo on it from the GPU of a high end GFX card?
mine is overheating badly, and i think from the look of it the sheild is on at a slight angle, so its not touching properly and causing it to overheat. I think it has a strip of black thermal glue around the edge with small gaps in some places, but i am unable to cut through it with thread or razor blades ![]() any ideas?

Try an xacto knife... they're friggen sharp and thin. much more sharp than a conventional double edged (or single) razorblade. be very very careful... otherwise you'll have a $500 paperweight!
In any case, if your card is overheating with stock cooling you should RMA it... the heatspreader being on crooked is a manufacturer's defect.

thanks zoson, i managed it eventually
![]() it was a manufactureres defect, far too much thermal compound and glue for the sheild, looked like it had been done twice. but then again, how could i send something back that i have allready had watercooling mounted on? they allways know when someone has removed the stock coolers ![]()

I'm not sure what nVidia's policy is, but I have successfully RMA'd defective hardware to ATi that had been altered with aftermarket cooling. I told them this was the case, and they said to simply slap on the original sink before returning it to them. I guess they figure that the aftermarket stuff will perform as well if not better than their own stock solution.
