Default 1/2" connect in-line water filter/strainers

Well for those of us who are using fine structured waterblocks, we're probably aware that block clogging can be an issue if care is not taken.

Been looking into small cheap in-line strainers, and found these:

Which can be found here

I just thought it useful, and perhaps the sort of device that may become more common-place in water-cooling systems now that the greater market is starting to swing towards finely channelled/structured blocks.

There's also a Shurflo model as well.

These filters use a fine stainless steel mesh strainer to do their job, but I don't particularly see why this mesh couldn't be substituted with the regular foam filter material that many pumps use.

For those using a res/airtrap, would it not be easier to fit some kind of filter to the bottom of the airtrap over the outlet.

This would do the job of filter and airtrap with only one set of fittings.

8-ball, good point on the air trap/res.

These will still be good for those with T's for adding water.

Very nice Cathar

I've been filtering my solution for a while now due to a junk pump from some garbage in the lines. Been running it through a coffe filter after removing it from my machine. You'd be surprised how much "stuff" is in the lines. Even brand new ones seem to have a large amount of clear stringy fuzzies, I imagine from hose manufacturing. I rinse all my new hoses out now before install.

Can't imagine what that kind of gunk would do to cascade block It'd prolly end up looking like a shower head ran on hard water for a year

My solution to filtering: The danner mag 3 comes bundled with a inlet filter which I modded to fit in the PVC radiator. Essentially, the inside of the resevior looks like this:

The Filter element looked like this from the side (it is a cylinder, with a smaller cylinder cut out inside.

|------------------------------|
|XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
|XXXXX|--------------------|
|XXXXX|
|XXXXX|
|XXXXX|--------------------|
|XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX|
|------------------------------|

I made it look like this:

|------------|
|XXXXXXX|
|XXXXX|---|
|XXXXX|
|XXXXX|
|XXXXX|---|
|XXXXXXX|
|------------|

Jammed it up between the two barbs and presto! Instant filter and air bubble remover.

I like the idea!

Few questions:
1. Is a filter only needed in the first few days?
After that the water/tubes/blocks should be clean,
and nothing left to filter....
2. If the filter needs cleaning, how do you plan to that?
(without empying your setup)
3. What will the flow restriction be?

I can pop the top off of the tube and use some kind of coat hangar with a hook on the end to dig it out, but there really is no need to change it. It is very porous so it catches stuff and is not likely to clog. Plus it is about 1.75" diameter pipe I think, so there is no obstruction. One time I did find a piece of teflon tape in the filter that could have really clogged my whitewater, but the filter kept that from happening (I guess it came out of my radiator since water used to flow through it the other way and it got trapped then, only to be freed from the new flow direction of the water.).

About the flow restriction, I put the thing under the faucet in the kitchen sink on full blast and water just went through it, none of the water pooled on top and spilled over the sides. It doesnt restrict one bit.
