Default Is it just me or is the "black ice" radiator kinda puny?

I was just looking at it after BillA's rant earlier and noticed that it was kinda tiny compared to the Hayden 676 that I was considering, any thoughts? I would love to see a shootout...

BTW, does anyone know anything about Little Giant pumps? MECI.com has a 500GPH with 17' head rating for only $25, looked pretty good to me but I don't know pumps....

blackice is very powerful, especialy for it's size. My father has one cooling his dual 1.2g AthlonMP server, it keeps up without even a slight hitch. It could probably take twice that load easily. Don't underestimate the size.

The Black Ice is a four-pass copper-core radiator which is very easy to mount without any case mods, fits one 120mm fan perfectly.

The Hayden 1676 is an aluminum stacked-plate cooler, which can be used with two 120mm fans, (albeit a tad narrow for 120's, might fit three 92's better.)

I just switched from a Hayden 1676 to a Black Ice, (all other things remaining equal), and my temps dropped by about 2C.

I originally decided to go with the Black Ice instead of the Hayden to avoid the galvanic corrosion issue, and to avoid needing case modifications, (with my case, I would have had to mount the Hayden outside the case with plumbing through the back-panel, I didn't really have the tools to do that.)

Dunno which of the two has the most heat capacity, but I am satisfied with the easier to mount Black Ice, which seems to be performing better in my system than the Hayden.

Al is teh suck compared to Cu. Unless you are on a tight budget get copper so that you don't have to worry about corrosion killing your system.

BTW, mounting a heatercore is a real bitch. If you have the cash the BlackIce is pretty sweet.

Gator, what about fan(s) were you using just a single with the hayden or did you do 2 and what size? I know the black ice is set up for a single 120mm, but you can fit 2 120's on the hayden easily....

Well if you're bent on size you should hang out for this:

This one is for case hacks who do it for keeps.

Thanks for the props gents. Gives one that fuzzy feeling inside...

*slaps oneself*

Ok ok enough of that carebear shite!

WaterPog:

For my temporary hookup with the Hayden 1676, I had the Hayden attached outside the two 120mm fans on the back panel of a LiteOn FS020 case, (had a 1-inch wide cardboard ring "duct" between it and the fans which were blowing out of the case through the duct and Hayden, all held together with duct tape.) Routed the 3/8 inch tubing into the case via an open slottie. It was kinda butt ugly but it worked reasonably well.

When I switched to the Black Ice, I mounted that in the front of the case with the 120mm fan there sucking outside air in through the Blackice. This kept the entire cooling system inside the case with no hoses hanging out anywhere, looks better and seems to perform slightly better as well - maybe due to the fact that the Black-Ice is breathing in cool external air, while the Hayden was getting case-exhaust air which was slightly warmer?

The LiteOn FS020 case with three 120mm Panaflo fans has plenty of airflow either way, so I doubt the exhaust air is more than a couple degree's warmer than ambient intake air - at least I can't measure any real difference with a common glass thermometer, which is all I have other than the mobo socket sensor at present.

Gator, Thanks for the break down....clears things up a bit, I have since decided to go copper and probably skip the pelt for the time being so I will not be using the hayden.

TNT2bluz, Is that a double black Ice? that would be perfect for my plan, I am planning on putting the radiator on the roof (of the case)anyway so the size is not an issue. I allready have 2 120mm's blowing up out the top of the case above/in the drive bays, and pland on using some ducted air to feed them to the radiator (fresh air through the drive bays to the fans and through the radiator). I have a global-win case with 3 external 5 1/4" bays only one of which is used, I plan on using the other two to duct air to the radaitor fans....what is the expected cost on that bad boy?

Waterpog, meet the Black Ice II. This will be for uber case hacks like you.

Costings will be anounced soon. It will remarkably not cost as much as it looks. Well I hope so at least when it gets on US soil.
