Is there anything to be gained by watercooling of a systems RAM?
Or adding fined heat sinks with a fan? Anyone tried this & results? Thanks |

From what I've read it makes no difference, even TEC cooling got no improvement, only time even fins are needed is if the RAMs voltage is high and the RAM is hot to the touch...

Like MDM said, you'll get no improvement. Just glue some heatsinks if they feel uncomfortably hot, and if it makes you feel better
![]() To get better memory / FSB scores, cooling properly the north bridge is the key. Use a chipset waterblock to maximize your chances. |

Hi Gmat & MadDog
How large of tubes and barbs on a northbridge block should I have? 8mm - 3/8" - ? If I can get away with it I'd use 8mm. Save the majority of flow for the Gfx chip. I'm still thinking in terms of setting it up as 5/8" to CPU then split the flow to NB & Gfx, .5" to Gfx and 8mm to NB if that will do the job well. Intend Iwaki pump MD-30 RZT. Will stay with air on the RAM. Saw a thread that refered to a site that's selling RAM water blocks, made me wonder if I'd missed something. |

Personally i went with 3/8" for both GPU & NB. I found that my NB (NForce2) produces as much heat (if not more...) as my GPU (a Geforce2 GTS). When they were air cooled, the GF2 had a smaller heatsink...
Basically it depends on your mobo. Some chipsets seem to produce more heat than others. Nforce2 seems to be quite hot indeed. DangerDen Z-blocks seem fine (if you're in the US) or if you're in Europe get those Aquacomputer Twinplex blocks. If you really want to, get the GPU block in 1/2" and the NB in 3/8". But staying in 3/8" for the GPU is enough, according to my own experience... As for RAM waterblocks, it's a scam. My Corsair XMS3200 is *cold* to the touch, not even barely warm. Note that i have *zero* airflow around them. And it's running at full 200MHz with aggressive timings. Save your bucks for something else ![]() |

Also agree with the others on cooling the north bridge! My fan NB fan failed on a few of my boards and it would lock up with raised FSB that would normally run fine. I am working on a few designs for NB blocks to mill out. Just need the time.... |
