Default what email client do you use?

i use full outlook. it works good, and has all the features i really want, like rules for incoming mail sorting through multiple accounts, a very good and portable way to back up all my saved email (which is a TON), stuff like that. and, it will probably be around, well, indefinitely.

however, it's kinda unreliable. it crashes more than i'd like, and uses a considerable amount of system resources. i really don't need the day planner and all that junk, however the contact manager with notes, addresses, etc is pretty nice to have combined.

are there any fairly lightweight programs out there that are just as good as outlook? maybe an outlook clone? i need something that's going to be available for a while, can import .pst files, and even if possible be able to export them as well (in case i need to go back to outlook). needs to work well in windows, however if it works in X as well, would be nice.

am looking at eudora, but it's having problems importing my mail file, and i have no idea how you set up mail rules (i have email that comes to certain addresses, or from certain addresses that goes directly into seperate folders).

my guess is i'm going to have to stay with outlook, and just grudge through another reinstall. but, i figured i'd ask.

oh yeah, right now every time i hit send/recieve it crashes. classic.

I use Eudora, and Eudora can be used via Wine on Linux.

You won't find many programs that can read or write Outlooks PST files (outlook express maybe, but then you're just asking to get an e-mail virus). But you seem to have forgotten that Outlook can read/write to many other formats as well (CSV comes to mind for something that virtually anything else can open). Just export you mailbox from Outlook and import it into whatever else (eg. eudora). If you need to go back, just export from Eudora back to CSV and re-import into Outlook.

Personally, I use Outlook 2002 and PocketOutlook. I like outlook and don't have any stability problems with it, and it sync's properly with my PocketPC. And since I use it at work as well I actually use the calendar/tasks/etc. other features it has. And through the PocketPC it keeps my home Outlook and my work Outlook all in sync. In the next month or so I plan on upgrading to the Outlook 2003 beta, I hear it's much nicer looking than 2002 and is stable enough to use.

hmmm.. yeah. i tried using eudora's import on a psd, and it just pulled in the folders, but no mail . i should try it exporting from outlook to eudora.

i dunno... i may just keep using outlook. i've been using it regularly for like 5 years now, just as well keep using it i guess. not familiar enough with much else, although i do kinda like the lightweight nature of eudora.

as far as reliability issues, outlook is really screwy. it gets sometimes where it will take forever to open. that's really annoying. then sometimes it will crash on startup, i finally had to basically reinstall it. then the latest problem, the crash on send/recieve, finally fixed itself. dunno why it does it, but if you leave it long enough, it just fixes itself and works. what a pile of crap

If you have a lot of IMAP folders then you may need to purge the deleted messages. Outlook Express has a handy button for doing that but I think it is kinda hidden in the full outlook.

I use outlook because I need massage rules and filtering on IMAP and OE just doesnt do that. I also use the calendar and tasks functions and keep everything synched with my visor deluxe.

How big is your .pst file? I had problems when I didn't archive and the .pst file got too big. Well that was also running W2000, not XPpro like I am now. And I mean really big like 400M. Well what do you expect I don't like throwing anything away. I do archive it now.

i usually archive stuff, but my exported pst is usually around 150mb at the moment. i delete all the junk mail of course, but everything else gets sorted and kept.
