Silverprop SE 462 Review

this guy appears to be getting much worse temps with a silverprop than a slk948. but notice the strong performance of the thermaltake kit, rofl! but at 70 watts the slk948 kicks the snot out of all of them.

The heatsink graph shows the temperature of a plate between the heat source and the heatsink. This is the temperature the heat source (processor) and heatsink are at their contact point.

Not sure what exactly to make of that.

so he is not applying the heatsource directly to the base of the blocks. thats like putting cotton in your ears before you test some headphones.

No he's applying a heat source to the base of the block THROUGH a little plate. It isn't clear to me from that article alone how everything is set up though. This isn't intrinsically a bad way to do things (see incoherent's flux block); avoid the personal attacks please

There is something to make of that, and that's one more TIM joint, I believe. With a variation of up to 0.15C/W, it can toss everything up quite nicely...

We have to say straight off that this SilverProp Cyclone SE S462 & S478 water block is designed for 1/2 diameter water pipes that use much more powerful pumps than the one inside the Thermaltake Aquarius III.

Unfortunately as you can see from out tests that these Cyclone SE S462 & S478 blocks do not give the same cooling performance as the standard water block with the Thermaltake Aquarius III we use.

And we would have liked to see the inlet hole slightly larger which at its present size acts to restrict the flow into the block.

Apparently they have yet to realize that the acceleration of the water hitting the fins is a benefit.

And as above the inlet should as in this picture be positioned to the very left of the fins and not in the centre for maximum heat transfer.

Doesnt the acceleration of the water (which is disliked above) turbulently force the water to either side?

We should tell Cathar to make the WW base thicker too. The fact that the heat needs to go into the water not the baseplate is of no importance.

Are they telling us that the Aquarious's pump would be insufficient for use with the SP, or are they telling us that they USED the Aquarous's pump in conjunction with the SP.

The top body could easily be made from a strong plastic and with 3/8 inch diameter pipe fittings to dramatically reduce the weight and allowing the copper base plate around the fin area to be thicker.

Wow, he actually thinks SP had no other choice but to make the plate sooo thin...

Also if aluminium was used for the top cover and cast with fins a small fan could be fitted for even more cooling. You could imagine the water pipes at either end with the fan in between them.

And how exactly would the heat travel to the top fins? Perhaps through the O-ring, or through some TIM along the edges of the block.

OK I think I am getting closer to figuring this out. The Thermaltake kit is an external box that has been extensively modified as shown here

For the Asetek Antarctica block, they did the following:

"We carried out a lot of tests as you can see here with the Asetek Antarctica water block using our Thermaltake Aquarius III cooling unit and its own water block. This did not take five minutes to carry out.

Initially we tested plumbing as per the instructions with the Asetek Antarctica and then again without the use of the centre pipe but simply pumping the cooling water across the whole water block from side to side.

We found that using our Thermaltake Aquarius III cooling unit we got better cooling performance from the Asetek Antarctica passing water across the whole water block and not as it says in the manual. It is that cooling performance that is shown here."

I cannot make out from their review whether they also tested the Silverprop under the same conditions; my guess would be yes.

If that is the case then some of their comments make sense at 0.1-0.25 GPM, the Cyclone WOULD benefit from a thicker base, and the Cyclone would certainly benefit from a more powerful pump (aka different cooling system altogether) than what is being used.

Maybe ask the author for clarification on these issues?
