If you have a spare drive then you only get 1/2 your total storage rather than 3/4. You have data1, data2,parity,spare (although the parity is spread over the three non-spare drives) and it can withstand two drive failures without data loss. If you delete the raid5 and spare then recreate the raid5 using all 4 drives you should get a total of 3x 112 = 336GB (or slightly less). My 705N gets 385GB as I used 160GB drives (which format to 137GB).

wgong,
Thanks for the reply. I found the Dell files and upgraded to 3.4.790. I installed two 80 gig drives which formated automatically. I had to run assist again to get a language available but it looks good now. As long as I stay below 137 gigs is there any need to upgrade to 3.4.805 (if it can be found)? Tom |

Wgong: Raid 5 is calculated roughly by total drives -1 in th array. If I read you correctly you only used 3 drives with a hot spare, so your number is corect. (112 * 3) - 112 = 224.
Oldjetdriver, itammo: Your 705N (4100) does not support large disk. So no updated is needed.

Opps, did not read very close, missed that, most all Dell's we see are the 705N's.
If I recall the Dell 701N is a v2 2000. Will need to confirm by BIOS v2+ or by DIMM memory chip. If v1 limited to no updates.

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to deploy a Quantum Snap 2200 240GB at my school. I would like to upgrade to (2) 250GB drives. Current specs: Model: 2000 series Software: 3.4.803 (US) Hardware: 2.0.4 Server: 815045 BIOS: 3.4.758 I understand that v.3.4.807 allows for larger hard disk drives. Adaptec is not offering me a complimentary support period. Can someone help me out with the updated OS files? jim_cureton at hotmail dot com Jim |

I would suggest acquiring the OS through legal chanels being a institution. Even if you have to pay for 1 support call.

Glad we could help.
BTW, if you need AD 2003, then you will have to upgrade to OS v 4.0.860. If you don't need it (or even know what it is), then v3.4.805 or 3.4.807 is plenty good enough... |

OK, Here is another newby looking for the info of the Gods.
I have a dell 701N, that has been setting on my shelf for 3 months and I am trying to make it useful, currently it is: Model: 701N Software: 3.4.790 (US) Hardware: 2.0.0 BIOS: 2.0.282 I have whzt I believe is a valid copy of 3.4.805, but whenever I try to upgrade it, I get the error that it is not a valid .sup file. My first question is Will the Dell Branded 2000s upgrade to 3.4.805? So I can add larger drives, I have a pair of 250 gig WDs I have purchased especially for it. Next Question: I contacted Adaptec about purchasing version 4.0.860 so I can get AD2003 support and was less than nicely told to shove off. So Is there anyplace I can purchase it? Next Question: Is there a version of assist available besides the dell version as I cannot connect to it any longer with the version I have. So, Is there anyone out there that can help me? Is there a way to De OEM it? |

Search the forum for "dell oem" without the quotes and picking a likely result leads you to http://forums.procooling.com/vbb/sho...light=dell+oem which answers your last question.
Why won't your Dell ASSIST talk to your 701N anymore?

You guys are awesome, It is now a Snap Appliance at 3.4.805, I can verify that it see greater than 130gigs, I am so darn happy that I am sending the 250 gig WDs back for 500gig Seagates, Would it be too much of an imposition to get pointed to the drive upgrade thread? and has anyone come across a way to purchase or access 4.0.806, so I can get it working with my AD2003? this has got me so happy I think I might even call in sick tomorrow to play with it some more. Too bad we cannot upgrade the NIC to Gigabit, then it would almost be perfect.

And If 4.0.860 should somehow come wondering around I would be even more beholding. |

Well, Now I have a bigger problem, I currently have 237gigs mirrored and cannot connect to it with any of my machines.
Vista whines that file and print sharing SMB is not suppported. Network path is not available. Windows 2003 whines that network path is not available, and cannot authenticate. Anyone ahve any clues to what could be causing? |

can you access the web interface via the server's IP address or see it in Assist?

First NO 4100 has ever supported LBA48bit, Remember the snap reads the total of the drives. IF it did we have to figure what is different on your 705.
issue "co de info" from debug to check capacity. POST Results. 805 does not support 2003 AD, just 2000. Check out the FAQ', Below the 4100 is fix for some AD support.

Drives sre synch'd fine, what I find odd is that it lists the first drive as drive 0, but the second drive is drive 2, so that implies with the right boost to the power supply it should be possible to have drives 1 and 3, I take it? it would be nice to be able to run 4 500 gig hds. |
