Java on Snaps

Does anyone know how to install java programs on a snap.

I got the JVM installed and it is working.

I have some .jar files that I would like to install and see if I can get them working.

I can't seem to get them to show up in the snaplet extensions web page.
Do they have to be installed in a special directory? registered? modify a config file?

Is there some command I need to use?

I tried the debug snaplet create command but I don't think I am getting the
syntax correct.

Has anyone had any luck installing any java programs and running them on a Snap 2X00?

If so can they provide and example of the code or just how they installed it.

Thanks.

The reason behind this is that I found a java media server code. I would like to see if I can use that to serve the pictures and music on my snap instead of having a computer run all the time.

Your code files have to be installed in a special folder. It's been a while but I think it is hidden. Look at the Java install and it reference to a folder $java, I think. You can either make a folder and put your files in, then change the pointer. Or use the def folder.

Depending on the snap, I do recommend extra ram.

Now if you have to reinstall the OS you may get random errors if the pointer has been moved. So remember to reset the pointer if you uninstall Java.

I found the directory in os_protected/java$

I put the .jar file in every sub directory in that directory.

I could not get it to show up in the snaplet page or use the debug command to

java run ".jar"
snaplet create
snaplet info

I didn't know if I had to register the snaplets somehow or change a config.

btw I have 256mg ram in the snap.

I know I am missing something.

I am tempted to rename it to the hello world file and see if that works because I know that runs

Is there an manual for java on the snaps? I looked into all the documentation that I could and all the talk about snaplets is the S2S application.

Again thanks for any info.

The startup file needs to have a specific name. I do not recall what it is, try using the built in help.

The help does not do anything for that.

I can't figure out how install it or configure it to run on the server.

I am not much of a java person. so that doesn't help.

Any other help or examples?

Or did this just die on the vine with noone doing anything with it.

Thanks again.

Once you have Java installed you must start it up. Then I think you need to have the startup file as Index.???? . Copy all of your files to the $JAVA directory, this is a hidden directory if I recall or to a directory of your choosing. You can unhide the $JAVA by removing the $ in the directry path. Then in the setup change the pointer to your files. I will see if I can find the specifics. I know of only 1 person who used java on a snap and that was years ago.

I have only started it once to see how the secure log in worked, and that was it.

edit: The default directory is JAVA$ it will only launch index.html file. Also need a min of 128meg of memory.

Use the search feature of this site and search JAVA on the SnapServer main thread.

I am still trying to figure out how to install a java application on the snap server.

I have JVM install and working. The hello world works.

I have update the machine to 256mb.

Has anyone had any luck adding a java program to the snap os.

I have copied the java directory off of the snap server and I am going through all of the files to see how it has configured the hello world program.

I just wanted to know if anyone had already done this and could save the time. But if not I will keep looking.

I have done the search for JAVA in the forum and I can't find any example of some one actually doing it, just a few rumors.

The web server need Index.html but nothing about java.

Blue thanks for all of the pointers. If you remember anymore please let me know.

Thanks again.
